each article would have easily qualified for a journal piece

Different from most textbooks on international law, Malcolm Evans' International Law is at once an introduction and a critical reflection on the subject, with each chapter written by a specialist in the field. While dressed as a textbook, each article would have easily qualified for a journal piece, simultaneously giving an overview of the subject while engaging actively with the key debates that the authors ably introduced. Each chapter is headed by an abstract or summary of the main hypotheses and areas of coverage. Chapter arrangements are also distinct, e.g. in many other textbooks, law of armed conflict and the use of force are addressed together but this book separates the two. Also, the International Court of Justice is given a chapter in itself, instead of subsumed under the “peaceful settlement of disputes”. Humanitarian intervention has been “updated” as a chapter on the “responsibility to protect”, exploring how the latter evolved into the former. The remarkable essays at the beginning are written by eminent scholars who are too familiar to need introduction, such as Martti Koskenniemi. These chapters offer a conceptual navigation point. In addition to the standard treatment on the sources, institutions and peaceful settlement of disputes, the book also provides a comprehensive guide on international law “in action”, i.e. its application in international criminal law, international human rights law, international economic law, international environmental law, and the law of the sea.

How ironic that the text for the class was so stressful for me to get though.Dr. Seaward should remove himself from the world of Academia and start a commune somewhere in the desert or mountains far away from folks who might take him serious enough to publish another one of his books.

Romantic Quickie Read

I'll admit that it was the title of this book that caught my attention. Without the obligatory descriptives of Billionaire, Sheik, Prince, Virgin or Secret Baby this book fairly jumped out from the shelf at Target right into my hot little hands.

In fact, I didn't even read the back cover before buying it, that's how enamoured I was at the thought of reading a Harlequin Presents without a secret baby/Billionaire Sheik storyline.

Well, for once my impulsive choice paid off. I liked this book. The heroine is a prettier than average woman and she knows it. She doesn't humble herself imagining that men are looking at her for any other reason than to ogle her hour glass figure. Her attributes cause her some trouble in the workplace and immediately I felt a sisterly bond. It's hard to have boobs and work with highly sexed men who seem to assume just the presence of breasts are an unequivocal sex invite. Such is the life for our dauntless heroine, Maya.

When the book starts out she's having a rotten dinner with her lecherous boss Jonathan and several other business associates. What's worse is that she's wearing a dress about a size too small and her boss, starts in with the flirting and naked foot rubbing under the table, so obvious. Just a sidenote, I knew a boy in school named Jonathan who used to get in trouble for taking his shoes off in class and stinking up the room with nasty foot odor. Anyway, the name Jonathan, for me anyway, is synonymous with smelly feet. So, back to the story, Maya, in an effort to avoid said foot rubber, sets off in search of a bathroom. Instead she finds the hero.

Now here's where the witty banter and sexual tension starts. With several cleverly baiting comments the hero manages to disturb Maya. I just love this! This is the reason I read romance.

So, onward, our hero maneuvers the situation so that he is Maya's boss and well, I can't say what happens next 'cause that would ruin the story.

So, all in all, I enjoyed this book which is more than I can say for most of the HP's I've read lately.

Totally Enjoyable

Maggie Cox books are new to me but after reading this one which I totally enjoyed, I'll be looking for more. You can feel the immediate attraction between Blaise and Maya. What I really liked about this storyline is that the heroine did not throw herself at the hero even when she needed a job and she has his business card. He could have any woman he wanted, but yet he had to make the first move and go in search of her. This book is definitely one to keep and one I will most definitely read again.

One of the Best Books I'll Ever Read

Luckily, one of my friends got me a pre-released copy signed by Jason and personalized by him. My friend knows that I have been following Jason for years (probably 3 or so at this point) and knows that I want to turn my crazy ideas into reality, so as an early birthday present, she got me a copy of Creativity For Sale.

Normally, I'm not much for reading this type of book, however, I have been giving heavy thought on turning my idea into a reality. After finishing this book, I can honestly say I feel prepared to start my new venture and finally make a decision in my crossroads of my life right now.

Jason goes step-by-step on how best to start a new business and also gives some mistakes that he has made over the years through his businesses. He doesn't downplay the importance of certain things and doesn't glorify anything. He calls it how he sees it. Which is truly refreshing.

After reading CFS, I feel truly inspired and want to do something with my life and even put down the book about halfway through just so I could clean out my garage (which, mind you, has been pestering me since about a month after we moved in which was over a year ago). It's not that Jason gives you motivational quotes and blah, blah, blah; he gives you the tools to get things done in a plain, witty language that speaks to the entrepreneur in most of us. And, yes, you read that correctly, most of us. I say most of us because as Jason warns, owning your own business is probably the most stressful and most rewarding job out there, but I want to add that it is not for the faint of heart.

So, in conclusion, if you want to start a business or launch a new product/service, THIS is the book for you.

Investigative journalist Dillon focuses on the chaotic years of 196990 to describe how British security forces attempted to infiltrate and destroy the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA). The two sides fought a deadly, no-rules war with spies, informers, assassination, misinformation, and wholesale coverup. While the IRA tried to destabilize Northern Ireland by bombing, compiling weapons, and murdering British troops, British security forces established their own ``unofficial'' hit squads to identify and murder IRA operatives. Dillon brilliantly illuminates the deadly, murky underworld of spies and informers, meticulously describing how British intelligence would arrest ``vulnerable'' IRA members and ``turn'' them with threats of imprisonment, blackmail, torture, and monetary rewards. Dillon also reveals how the IRA systematically searched out and eliminated informers within their midstusually with a bullet to the head. About the Author
Martin Dillon is a native of Belfast although educated in England. He lived in France for a time and returned to Northern Ireland to work as a journalist with the Irish News before joining the Belfast Telegraph. He also worked as a freelance journalist for several national newspapers and American periodicals. In 1973 he wrote Political Murder in Northern Ireland which is regarded as the definitive study of political assassination in Northern Ireland. His second book, Rogue Warrior of the SAS, is a biography of the Second World War hero, Lt. Col. Robert Blair Mayne, and is published by Arrow. The Shankill Butchers which was a bestseller in both Ireland and Britain was the first in his trilogy of books about Northern and Southern Ireland. Martin Dillon has written plays for BBC radio and television and has been Editor in Northern Ireland of many of the BBC's programmes in the area of current affairs. He now works for the BBC History Unit in London.

Best book I have read on Northern Ireland

There are many reasons to buy and admire Martin Dillon's 'The Dirty War,' which is nothing less than a monumental achievement in investigative journalism. Dillon peels the lid off a very large can of worms--two decades of undercover conflict between the IRA (Official and Provisional), British Army, RUC, Loyalists and assorted other players in Northern Ireland from 1969 to 1990. The author's painstaking research (including many first-hand interviews with participants) and scrupulous objectivity should make this book required reading in newsrooms and journalism schools everywhere. But it's not some dry exercise. A lot of 'The Dirty War' rivals the best non-fiction crime and detective writing. Dillon knows how to tell a story. He also has a knack of involving the reader in his exhaustive analysis of individual incidents and themes. When answers aren't evident, his not afraid to admit it; rather, he asks questions and draws us in. This book is an absolute must for anyone interested in the modern British Army and its counterterrorist tactics. But it's not an anti-British book and it's not an anti-IRA book. It IS continually fascinating and, refreshingly, has a strong moral compass in the author's value set to help the reader through the unpleasantness.

Dillon knows his Irish history

A good book by Dillon. He covers all parts of the Northern Irish Troubles, including British Army and security forces undercover actions and the way in which the IRA use devious "honeytraps" to tempt British Army men to their deaths. It also gives a section on the little known Loyalist paramilitary forces. I Liked this book as it was easy to read and gives a good insight into the past 30 years of the troubles. Anyone who is just getting into Irish history and is unsure about what to read, The Dirty War is an excellent starting point as, from the start, it gives you no illusions, even the title tells the truth.

No Hands Are Clean in The Dirty War

While it may seem strange for a book to leave one feeling both depressed and exhilarated, experiencing such paradoxical emotions is the norm with one of Martin Dillon's books. I have read three of his nonfiction works in the past year, most recently The Dirty War, and have come to the conclusion that I am not likely to find another writer/journalist who can get so close to the players in Northern Ireland's Troubles, elicit as much information from them, provide more complete complementary information from a vast array of written source material, and make it all coherent to the average reader. I had only sketchy knowledge of the Troubles before I started reading Dillon's works--I now find myself following his detailed accounts of events and trains of thought as though I had known them all my life. How exhilarating to be in commune with an author of such abilities!
And how depressing! It makes one weep to see the depths to which individuals and governments can sink to push their agendas, which range from the pursuit of profit to revenge to the perpetuation of a cynically unfair set of policies over a population. The last motive applies equally to illegal British interference in the internal affairs of Northern Ireland and to IRA paramilitaries who condemn the British justice system while pursuing their own perverse notion of justice that usually ends in the addition of another name to the "Disappeared" list. In the end, the Irish people are the pawns in a chess game without clear motive or end.
Maybe peace will come to Ireland some day. In The Dirty War and his other books, Martin Dillon reveals how high the odds are stacked against it--yet how to hope and work for it still.
