Perfect gift. Many of the songs would take me about a 1-2 days of practice to get down (I've played since elementary school). Intricate enough to sound interesting, but not overly difficult. A lot of the pieces are 2-3 pages long... I wish some of them could have been longer, but will be perfect for sacrament meeting performances.

She has a new bedroom that terrifies her, and she's positive that something is hiding under her bed. And to make matters worse, her mother gets a job to help pay for the new bedroom. Ramona sure misses her and the cookies she used to bake. School finally starts and Ramona realizes that the first grade is not for cowards.

A funny, interesting book!

Ramona the Brave is six years old, just like me. She has brown hair like me, wears dresses like me and is in the first grade like me.

Ramona lives in a house with her big sister (Beezus), her Dad, her Mom, and Picky-Picky (her cat). Ramona is starting first grade. The first days are bad for her. She doesn't like first grade at all. It turns out better than she expected, though!

I liked it when the doggy chased her and she figured out how to get him to stop with her shoe.

Ramona is brave, spunky and a good artist. I was disappointed when the book ended. I wanted to read more about her. I'm glad there are more Ramona books I can read!

Good place to start when reading Cleary

This might be the best of the Ramona and Beezus books, because it captures the mindset of a six year old so perfectly. Ramona is a girl who tries to be good, but sometimes can't stop herself from being bad. She is interested in things like her own special version of the letter Q, which she dolls up to look like a kitty, or making a paper slipper during recess.

While the Quimby girls remain blissfully oblivious of some of the weightier problems that real life children might have to face at home, Ramona is an interesting realistic character who children will feel a kinship with. Her tribulations at school with classmates are particularly relevant.

At 124 pages, the book is longer than most books targeted to this audience, but it will be a good challenge, and the chapters remain short and simple. If you're thinking of introducing a young reader to this prolific and popular author, this might be the best place to start.

Guts! Guts! Guts! Guts!
This is easily one of the best Ramona books. It is time for Ramona to start First Grade. Prior to her start she and her sister Beezus, play in the neighborhood park and the bad boys make fun of Beezus's name in a profane way. Then when Ramona starts school all kinds of things don't go her way. Her new teacher, Mrs. Griggs seems not to like her, because she never lets Ramona take attendance or lead the pledge of allegiance. Then she gives another student a passing grade for plagiarizing Ramona's art project. After Ramona destroys the classmates plagiarism, she has to apologize for show and tell. But my favorite part was when Ramona's family laughed at her for saying the word "guts."

I really like Kaelin, her personality and story. I have found a lot of motivation in this book. It's good to hear from a person who has been through tough struggles.

I like that in the book she kicks you a bit to challenge your beliefs about what your body is capable of. I think it's a bit unrealistic, though, to assume that all of us who start weight lifting will end up with a super tight and sexy bod. Some of us have saggy skin, and I don't think weight lifting will ultimately get me to bat-wing free zone. I know she's been to the heavy side, but I look at before pictures of her and I'm like... man... I still don't think she gets what it's like to have like 2 inch bat-wings. I'm very small now, and I still have the same bat wings. I'd have to build a whole lot of muscle to even begin to tighten that up. So it feels a bit preachy about you CAN achieve your dream body, even if the extra skin hanging off might not make it completely possible. Im sure that sounds like an excuse, but seriously... tight skinned people just don't understand!

I agree with some that it's disappointing that it's a motivational book with a lot of promotion for her program. I admit, after reading it I was tempted to buy. But I changed my mind and have just been eating cleaner and continuing my exercise.

One thing that bugs me is promoting protein bars and sugar substitute. Yucky. I have read a lot of bad things about protein bars. And of course, a lot of bad things about sugar substitute. Foodeducate app compares protein bars to candy bars. A lot of additives, sugar substitute, and unnatural protein. But I digress, and it's only a small part of her bigger picture.

And one other aspect that lowers the stars.. is this bashing of other weight loss programs. I don't know where the information is coming from that says people on weight watchers or other diets always gain it all back. I like this book and the message Kaelin brings to her FB and Snapchat followers, but the approach of bashing others programs based on only your own personal failures with it sounds very salesy.

I will say I found the "find your why" chapter very motivational. And again, besides my own personal critiques and beliefs, this book was motivational.

Understated Appreciation

I first saw these photographs at an exhibit in the Portland Art Museum. If you're looking for drama, this is not your book. It's a a candid glimpse into everyday culture for women in the ~1960s. I can see why some may find it banal, but the realism was beautiful and engaging to me: I loved seeing the fashion, public sphere, and body language of the subjects. I plan to buy this for myself and a couple of family members this holiday season for a coffee table book.

I came to this translation of the Duino Elegies without knowledge of any other and with just a smattering of German. Of Rilke, I knew just a few short lyrics. It was a challenging and disturbing experience and, finally, a very lofty one to traverse the world offered us here. The English, considered on its own, has a wonderful melody not revealed quickly, for the style is subtle and understated. To those who don't know the work, this edition, with the original and the English on facing pages offers a wonderful opportunity to add a masterpiece to their storehouse.

horrid translation

I haven't read other translations of the Elegies so I can't compare, but this one was so frustrating I've already given it away. I was looking forward to having the original German printed side-by-side to study it, but what this revealed pretty quickly was how much of the original nuance and meter was lost in the contortion to colloquial American English. Young also broke up Rilke's complex, prose-like text into triadic lines, as if American readers needed smaller pieces to chew on. Perhaps. But I hated it. Between the colloquialisms and the line breaks, it came across to me as awkward and artificial, an effort to dumb-down Rilke's work.

Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) was a Bohemian-Austrian poet, whose deeply mystical poetry has influenced poets, theologians and thinkers down to this day. And among Rilke's best known works are his Duino Elegies. This book presents the ten elegies in their original German, and (on the facing page) translated into English.

I must say, I think that David Young did a great job of translating the elegies, maintaining their lyrical mood. It's a really interesting book to read, a true movement of the soul. I highly recommend it!

If You Play Hide and Seek With a Dinosaur, Just Pretend You Can't See Him

We're big fans of the "I Can Read!" paperbacks, and started to run out of new "My First" level books. I looked at the Level 1, Beginning Reading, books and happened upon these two oldie but goodie books from Syd Hoff.

"Danny and the Dinosaur" first came out in 1958, and was followed a year later by "Sammy the Seal". I was delighted to see them reissued as "I Can Read!" books. They are a particularly good deal because they are twice as long as the usual "I Can Read!" books, but are still available at the regular paperback price.

In "Danny and the Dinosaur" a kid meets a live dinosaur at the museum and heads out into the City with him for a day of wild/mild adventure. In "Sammy the Seal" a friendly seal who's curious about life is allowed a day out of the zoo so he can wander around and explore. Both books feature kind and friendly kids, helpful adults, cheerful adventures and no drama. Is this a 50's sort of thing? Well, yes, the books do have a bit of a nostalgic rose-colored-glasses feel to them, but they aren't glaringly old-fashioned and they've actually aged awfully well.

So, these are two books that you might recognize from your own childhood library, they aren't franchise or movie tie-ins, they are readable at the recommended new reader level, they are mellow and colorful, and they're upbeat and cheerful.That's not bad at all.

Great for beginning readers

Bought this for a former student who is expecting. This was my favorite book growing up (my dad said he had it memorized) and I read it to my boys a lot too. It is a great beginning reader for children. Highly recommend!

Great book for kids of all ages

This was one of my favorite books from childhood and now it's one of my 2 yo daughter's favorites too. It is also a great first book to read for elementary school children. (It was one of the first things my siblings and I ever read aloud.) Cute story and I highly recommend it.
