He measures the slow change from pictograph to stroke to the style and shape of written characters by the great calligraphers.

Speech and writing are two organs of the same human impulse--the conveyance of thought: the one operating through hearing, the other through sight; the one by sound from mouth to ear, the other by form or image from hand to eye. But each can do something besides convey thought. Spoken words can be so arranged as to discharge aesthetic "musical" significances, as in much Western poetry. Written words can be formed to liberate visual beauties; and it is these which form the subject of this book. In addition to aesthetic considerations, the text deals with such more practical subjects as the origin and construction of the Chinese characters, styles, technique, strokes, composition, training, and the relations between calligraphy and other forms of Chinese art.

For the third edition the author has added two new chapters: "Calligraphy and Painting" discusses the dependence of Chinese painting on calligraphic training and techniques; "Aesthetic Principles" explores the fundamental concepts underlying every Chinese art form.

Chinese Calligraphy is a superb appreciation of beauty in the movement of strokes and in the patterns of structure--and an inspiration to amateurs as well as professionals interested in the decorative arts.

A Timeless Teaching Book on Kanji or Chinese Calligrphy

As a Chinese brush painting teacher I would recommend this book to my student who start learning Chinese painting or Calligraphy. The new additional chapters in this third edition covers the historical and aesthetical relationship between Chinese calligraphy and painting as well as other art forms like seal engraving. If you, like the author(and me), are from China and teach Chinese as second language, Chinese calligraphy or Chinese art history you will definately need to have this book. BTW, I have got a Chinese version of this book too so I can compare it with the English version which helps me to learn how to teach my Chinese painting class in English. I have not found a college-level teaching book better than this one in the field.

The book deals with the traditional art of Calligraphy from both a philosophical and an aesthetic point of view and uses numerous examples for the serious student of Chinese Calligraphy. It is written in a lively and informed manner that will stimulate the reader's imagination and appreciation of the art of Calligraphy and its masters throughout history. It is the #1 book in the field.

This book is an excellent overview of Calligraphy through the history of China. It goes in detail from the earliest Seal Writing to the modern Running Grass styles, with a plethora of information on famous calligraphers and many illustrations of their individual styles.. The author also goes into the techniques of calligraphic writing as well as a brief overview of the tools of the calligrapher. My only criticism is the brevity of his information here--I have found that the difference between Chinese ink sticks is so profound, one could easily write a chapter on this subject alone, but perhaps that should be the subject of a monograph.

In any case I very highly recommend this book, both to aspiring calligraphers and to historians who wish to get a fair appraisal of calligraphy's cultural importance in China.

I went thru the pages of the book and I give it a rate of 5 star. This book was highly recommended by my OB/GYN and Abdomen Instructor who said she always used it when she was a Tech., because it shows landmark/s to help you know that you are at the right image/structure. She was right. The landmarks are very helpful and are side by side with the images. You don't have to flip pages to look for these landmarks. As far as I am concerned, this is a must have book for scanning especially for beginners like me.

Eyeball on Fire contains 50 3D Stereograms created by two of the world’s premiere stereogram artists, Gene Levine and Gary W. Priester. Stereograms are 2D images that when viewed correctly, reveal a magical hidden 3D picture.

This is Levine and Priester’s first Kindle publication designed specifically for the Kindle Fire tablet. They are co-artist/authors of five published paperback books of stereograms as well as the two primary contributors to TJ MOOK Magical Eye, the wildly popular Japanese stereogram magazine series which has sold close to 6 million copies. They are also the artist/authors of EYEBALL I, II, and HOW TO EYEBALL 3D STEREOGRAMS, iPad apps.

The images contained in this book are state of the art and range from classic hidden image stereograms in which a three dimensional image is hidden in what appears a random pattern, to sophisticated hybrid stereograms that encompass a variety of unique techniques developed over the years by Levine and Priester.

Contrary to what many think, almost everybody is capable of seeing a 3D Stereogram. Even if your eyes are not perfect and even if you wear glasses. You do need two functioning eyes, and that’s about it. The trick to seeing 3D Stereograms is to relax your eyes and to try to focus a little behind the image rather than on the image itself. Once you learn this simple technique, an exciting new world will open to you. And once you have seen your first 3D Stereogram, seeing the next and the next and the next gets easier and easier.

I didn't think it could get any better.

If you want a visual treat, order this book today. No, order a dozen to give for Christmas. I'm giving them to my elderly relatives as well as the children and everyone in between. I love to watch my Uncle Makloof roar with delight when he discovers the images. Priester and Levine are genius and this may be their best, but then I say that about all of their collaberations. Don't miss this one.

[STARRED REVIEW] “Cyberpunk progenitor Sterling’s alternate history novella is bizarre, chock-full of famous people in improbable situations, and wildly entertaining, even when the world-building seems to go a little off the rails. Lorenzo Secondari, a veteran of the recently ended Great War and forever changed by it, is the head engineer of the titular utopia, the Italian free state of Fiume. He and his compatriots build flying boats and fight communism while dealing with American secret agents, including Harry Houdini and Howard Lovecraft (who’s now working as Houdini’s publicity agent after going into advertising). Hitler died saving another man’s life in a bar fight, Wilson was poisoned, and Mussolini’s been disabled by a pair of bullets aimed “where a man least likes to be shot,” so the Europe in which Secondari is attempting to create his radio-controlled airborne torpedoes and other gizmos is already massively different from ours. An introduction by Warren Ellis and an interview with Sterling sandwich the novel, both bearing an air of false gravitas, but the actual story is wacky and fun what-if-ing at its finest.”

[STARRED REVIEW] “Noted sci-fi maven and futurologist Sterling (Love Is Strange, 2012, etc.) takes a side turn in the slipstream in this offbeat, sometimes-puzzling work of dieselpunk-y alternative history. Resident in Turin, hometown of Calvino, for a dozen years, Sterling has long been experimenting with what the Italians call fantascienza, a mashup of history and speculation that’s not quite science fiction but is kin to it. Take, for example, the fact that Harry Houdini once worked for the Secret Service, add to it the fact that H.P. Lovecraft once worked for Houdini, and ecco: why not posit Lovecraft as a particularly American kind of spook, “not that old-fashioned, cloak-and-dagger, European style of spy,” who trundles out to Fiume to see what’s what in the birthplace of Italian futurism-turned-fascism? Lovecraft is just one of the historical figures who flits across Sterling’s pages, which bear suitably futuristic artwork, quite wonderful, by British illustrator John Coulthart. Among the others are Woodrow Wilson and Adolf Hitler, to say nothing of Gabriele D’Annunzio and Benito Mussolini. “Seen from upstream, most previous times seem mad,” notes graphic novelist Warren Ellis in a brief introduction, but the Futurist project seems particularly nutty from this distance; personified by Lorenzo Secondari, a veteran of World War I who leads the outlaw coalition called the Strike of the Hand Committee in the “pirate utopia” of the soi disant Republic of Carnaro, its first task is to build some torpedoes and then turn them into “radio-controlled, airborne Futurist torpedoes,” not the easiest thing considering the technological limitations of the time.
