I hate this text book

Poorly written with little or no graphic/ visual information to help you. Text is repetitive, badly written and dry.

If it required for the class get it I guess but you certainly won't learn anything from it.

Needs the editors to go back through it

This book is a very audacious one in its scope as it attempts to provide the basis of positivist analysis for public policy. It briefly skims over the methods of quantitative analysis in order to give the reader an idea of the sort of 'toolkit' a public policy analyst would employ in their work; however, in trying to be so bold, it comes up short. The fast and heavy approach has left some areas of the book without a full explanation, and thus accompanying instruction will have to pick up the slack. On other areas outright errors are present, like a 2 year moving average that manages to start after only 2 quarters, an error in editing that should state the moving average is a 2 quarter period lag instead of years, and other calculations in the book create errors that do not match the presented output. While this will not create a problem if the book is used in a course whereby the instruction accounts for these errors, the errors will be problematic for the reader who is trying to use this book as a method of learning individually as they will be without methods and examples to understand what is being explained. Furthermore, in the presentation of data throughout the book the editors failed to include any indicators that the data would continue onto another page when such carryovers occurred, and thus if students were instructed to use the data provided in the text as an exercise then mistakes are very prone to happen.

Because of the attempt to teach so much in so few pages, and then making grave mistakes in those pages, I was forced to reduce this book's rating. Overall Gupta's efforts are genuine and the book does well to give a method of introducing these topics; however, the book could not be used in a vacuum of information. Hopefully the next edition has a more thorough editing.

This is a well written book. It appears to have been edited and reviewed well.
The author discusses what prayer is, what prayer can do for you, and some techniques for prayer,

I believe this God was inspired by God Himself

I have wondered for years why some people live and why some people die when I've spent so much time praying both. I'm often in awe when I read or hear about miracles of healings in the lives of people I just knew wouldn't pull through. While I am grateful for their healing, I am at the same time perplexed by the fates of others. Dr. Price does an amazing job breaking down this information into bite-sized pieces, using Scripture to backup it all up. Not only am I now able to look at prayer and life in a totally different way, I have learned so much more about my life and prayer and the possibilities ahead. Because of the valuable lessons taught in this book, I am able to look at life in a totally different way.

You will not be disappointed!

WHEN PRAYER IS NOT ENOUGH TO HEAL YOUR BODY" is a refreshing word that opens up the readers understanding of what prayer is. From start to finish, Dr. Price holds the reader's hand as she unpacks the answer to unanswered prayers. I especially benefited from the question, "what do you need to do in addition to praying?"

The book is an easy read and enjoyable! You will come away feeling hopeful, exhilarated, and energized about prayer.

This is not a supplemental video series that one can use to augment learning on one's own. I purchased this with that intention. You have to have a school access code. If the school does not subscribe to this then you will not be able to watch this series. Luckily I saw that before I peeled it open because once opened this cannot be returned. I will put a 1star rating not because of the content, that I was not able to view but because I was Not able to view it

For Love and Honor by Jody Hedlund – Medieval Fable Echoes ‘Beauty and the Beast’

The third, and presumably final, novel in Jody Hedlund’s YA historical series rounds to its end with its final Knight, Bennet, finding his own story. In this story there’s a distinct fairy tale quality that doesn’t overshadow the story’s quiet nature, but rather enhances it. There are nods to the Beauty and the Beast fable because of the secret Sabine hides, only the difference here is that Bennet doesn’t know what it is for the majority of the story.

This heightens Sabine’s reactions to Bennet (from the reader's perspective), and her emotional turmoil is all the more poignant and heartbreaking as we struggle along with her.

Inside the artifacts and marble “pages” of this story lies a beautiful gem. Hedlund has again crafted a sweet, nostalgic tale that revisits a time when men were gentleman and let nothing stand in the way of honor. The characters complement one another, all at some point willing to sacrifice anything (even their lives) for the good of others. Surface level may pit For Love and Honor as sweet, but underneath, this is a story of loss, hope, honor, forgiveness, and love.

Those who enjoy Hedlund’s adult historical reads or YA historical fiction will find a treasure in this series. It’s an easy, quiet kind of read that ups the excitement in the latter half (in rapid fashion). The most important thing being that there is a happy ending. It’s just one that comes at the cost of time, adversary and misunderstandings. All of which serve a greater purpose. For the characters (and us!) to realize that sometimes the most precious things come at the cost of patience and persistence.

Fans of "A Daring Sacrifice" (book two) and "An Uncertain Choice" won't want to miss this adventurous (and romantic!) story.

Love's true test

I just finished For Love and Honor and it was so beautifully written. I loved everything about it. I loved how Sabine hid her wounded heart through humor and knowledge of art and history like she hid her wounds. I loved Bennet's heart and character and sense of honor for those he loved. Wow! It was just so wonderful. I definitely recommend this book.

A good, clean YA read

First of all, just LOOK at that cover! Isn’t it a beauty? Oh my word, I mean, that cover is just gorgeous.

And now with that said I will tell you that reading For Love and Honor by Jody Hedlund was like riding a rollercoaster. It certainly did strange things to my visceral organs like a rollercoaster would. And just when you thought the ride was over and you were safe. BAM! Suddenly you’re whisked to the side and forced to endure several loopy loops before finally reaching the safety of ‘The End’. Of course, I certainly didn’t expect anything less after reading the first two books in this series. In fact, I think that I even might have enjoyed this book more than An Uncertain Choice though A Daring Sacrifice is still my favorite of this series (sigh… Colin).

I really enjoyed the characters in this book, and was chuckling at the interactions between them. Lady Sabine was such an amusing heroine. I enjoyed her witty dialogue and droll humor, and her relationship with her grandmother made me smile. I wasn’t so sure I was going to enjoy reading about Sir Bennet, he had seemed rather aloof in the other books, but this book gave me a different perspective of him. He may be the strong and silent type with high ideals, but he is not above engaging in witty banter. And his mother is certainly right, that boy can be such a charmer when he puts his mind to it.

This book isn’t all fun and games though. There were some scenes that were quite intense, and I could only wince at some of the stupid, relationship damaging, things some characters did in the course of this book. I couldn’t put the book down (though several times I did consider closing it just to allow myself to catch my breath) and I read it in one day. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I am sad to see this series end. Please write more books like this one, Jody Hedlund.

Caveat Networker

It seems like much of the efficacy of Ferrazzi's tactics lies in blurring the distinction between the personal and the professional connections. Not even church-going remains sacred.

At what point does a close-knit network become more invaluable than acquaintanceships struck during in-flight snackbreaks? Are 500 people willing to answer your calls (after the umpteenth time you've attempted to ambush them on the phone during their off hours) really an asset? Readers should keep in mind that one will not be able to fool all of the people all of the time with false pretenses of friendship. Ferrazzi's work would be more effective if he differentiated between intensities of friendship and the tactics most appropriate for each.

Further difficulties include:
-Networking Plan of Action (unfortunately acronymed NAP) includes scarcely a page of information about how to construct one.
-The arguments are often internally inconsistent: receiving an invitation to a 15 min coffee break is an affront, while sending one tops the personal arsenal list. Katharine Graham is eulogized as a champion of both "somebodies" and "nobodies." Yet Ferrazzi's lists of "people he'd like to meet" and his incessant extolling of the virtues of name-dropping seems to indicate "nobodies" are nobodies in his book. Finally, the distinction between a "networking jerk" and commendable behavior is, at best, subtle.
-For an individual so concerned with connectedness, it is curious that a bibliography or appendix of suggested reading is entirely absent.

May I suggest:
*How to Win Friends and Influence People: soft skills development
*Big Fish (a novel of "mythic proportions" by Daniel Wallace): a more sympathetic view on spin, for contemplating your own self-marketing plan or why Ferrazzi really left Deloitte.
*The Tipping Point: Chapter 2 is a more rigorous exploration of the roles the uber-connected play in social networks.

Hardly "revolutionary"

The book isn't that bad, but it isnt worth buying with so many other masters out there writing about how to get it done. Here's what's wrong....

First, it's billed as "revolutionary" concepts which I found to hardly be true. Almost evey idea was something that I've read in a Covey, Mackay, Peters, etc book. Recycled.

Further, he's so proud of his accomplishments it becomes exhausting to keep up with all the great things KF did in his life.

Finally, he writes often about how he was from poor, underprivileged family and he had nothing but his "revolutionary" concepts to break him into The Club. I believe it at first, until he started (and then repeated) to tell the reader about how he went to a private elementary and HS, then to Yale and Harvard BS. He was IN the club from first grade - hardly a life course that demonstrated how unique and terrific his practices were.

A Valuable Message; Details May Vary

For all the five-star reviews that are going to pop up here in the next few days, be cognizant that the author of this book is a master networker, and is adept at calling in favors. What follows is an unbiased look at the book.

The author's message is simple yet powerful: Everything you do in life is enabled by others. The more people you know, the more you are capable of, and the more you are capable of helping others. The power of your network goes up exponentially with the number of relationships and with the strength of those relationships. Anyone who thinks that success is based solely on merit is sadly delusional.

The advice and techniques he gives are broken out by chapter. Some are insightful and useful, such as discovering what's important to people and finding ways to help them, how to work conferences, and how to connect with other well-connected people. Others are questionable from a style standpoint, and seem to serve as a boastful review of the author's own methods, such as his extravagant dinner parties, or interrupting a conversation midstream in order to call someone who is relevant to the current topic. He also emphasizes constant emailing and calling just so you don't fall off someone's radar, even if you have nothing to say to that person except "I exist". How annoying.

The book gets 3 stars for being important and relevant. It gets another for getting down and dirty in the details of connecting with people. It doesn't get the fifth star for being verbose, sometimes repetitive, and for taking such an extreme stance when most of us are mere networking mortals. At its core, the ideas in this book are incredibly valuable, once you adapt them to your own personality.

About the Author
Madeleine Bunting was born in North Yorkshire. After studying history at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, she won a Knox postgraduate fellowship to study and teach history at Harvard University. She worked for an independent television production company joining the Guardian as a reporter in 1989. She became the newspaper's religious affairs correspondent in 1995.

Captives and Captors at War

The five-year occupation of the Channel Islands by the Nazis during WWII (1940-1945) was "swept under the carpet" both during the war by the (mainland) British authorities and afterwards by the British and the Islanders themselves who were never sure what to make of their islands' behavior. The author has done a very good job putting together information that could not have been easy to uncover as well as interviewing islanders, Germans and former slave laborers (mostly Russian). The Channel Islands are a cluster of semi-independent islands, each with her own island government, situated about 20 miles off the coast of England and 7-12 miles from the coast of France. Guernsey, Jersey and Alderney are the best known. Despite their proximity to France, the islands have always thought of themselves as English and were almost totally dependent on England for food, fuel and manufactured goods. They were also a holiday destination for the English but otherwise not of strategic value in the war (so thought the British). For Hitler, however, occupying the Channel Islands was his first (and only as it turns out) foothold in England. This was to be a "model occupation", and for various reasons, as the book well explains, it was. Basically the British armed forces abandoned the islands when it became clear Hitler was approaching and left the islanders to cope on their own. They coped as best they could with dwindling supplies and under punishing restrictions (no cars, no radios), but after five years there was sometimes a fine line between captives and captor, the latter pretty much abandoned as Hitler started pulling back and ultimately losing the war. The camps and slave laborers were another side as well, and the author has done, I feel, a very good job presenting all the evidence she could find and coerce from both the locals and former slave laborers. This book was written in 1995. No doubt less of the individuals Madeline Bunting interviewed would be alive today. The Model Occupation is a fascinating study in war, politics and human nature.
My interest in the subject was sparked by a British drama series called "Island at War". I think the two together make for a very good insight.

Very interesting, little-known WWII history

I found this book very interesting. I've read many books on WWII, but this is a little known, but very worth knowing, aspect of the war. Shows human nature at it's best and worst.

Well researched and presented

A most unusual and well-researched work that is entirely "readable". I learned a great deal, and Bunting challenges several previously-held notions about how the German authorities treated workers. The subject matter of the occupation is treated with respect. A welcome addition to my occupation library.
