My second book in Portuguese! I was elated to understand most of it, thanks to much previous reading in Spanish , Frrench and Italian, as well as to discover I already practice or have many of the traits of...voila!....a genius! It's nice to know I am on the right track, not that I'm consciously trying to be a genius or that I think I am one. No, I was just trying to see if the book was easy or hard to comprehend. It was not only fairly easy, it was informative as well. So, many thanks to the author!

TALKS MORE ABOUT PSEUDOCODE THAN ACTUAL CODE. The book shows more pseudocode than the actual javascript code with it's examples. There is Javascript examples but not as much as there should be.

So out of date it is pitiful

Once you "learn" something about JavaScript in this book, you will have to turn around and RE-LEARN how to correctly program JavaScript. Just for example, the book uses such ancient constructs as prompt() and document.write(), JavaScript code that has been obsolescent for at least 10 years and completely obsolete for the last several years.

It is unconscionable that an author would foist five to 10 year old material off on poor struggling students and, at the same time, over-charge for such by a factor of at least five times.

Any instructor who chooses this book to teach a MODERN class in JavaScript should be ashamed of herself/himself. Students assigned this book should protest to the school that they are being taught techniques that are so far out of date as to make the instruction worthless in a contemporary environment.

This book utterly fails to be a good introductory text for programming. It fails completely to be a good resource for JavaScript as well. It's very hard to describe why.. it's just a terrible and uninspiring book that no one else should bother purchasing.

Paul Sann (1914-1986) was one of the great newspapermen of his generation. A lifelong observer of organized crime, he previously wrote about outlaws and frontier desperados in Pictorial History of the Wild West (1954, with James D. Horan), and about gangsters in The Lawless Decade (1957)–his lively account of the Roaring Twenties, which was reprinted by Dover Publications in 2010. An authority on New York City crime and politics–“those Gold Dust Twins of Manhattan civilization”–Sann quit high school in 1931 to become a $12-a-week copyboy and, in turn, a reporter covering all the beats (courts, police, housing): a rewrite man, Washington correspondent, night city editor, managing editor, city editor, and, in 1949, executive editor, running the day-to-day operations of the New York Post for almost 29 years. In addition to writing front page headlines and “putting out” the first edition, even as an executive, Paul Sann never stopped being a reporter. In 1951, he broke the story of Joe DiMaggio’s retirement. In 1955, his explosive interview with Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in international reporting. In 1964, he covered The Beatles’ first invasion of the U.S., and, in 1968, he took to the blood-drenched streets of Chicago to cover the Democratic National Convention. In 1973, he traveled to the Soviet Union with New York Mayor John V. Lindsay under the guise of an “urban affairs expert,” but really to write the story of the dissident Moscow Jews battling to emigrate to Israel. In October of that year, when the Yom Kippur War broke out, Sann, then 59, flew to Israel to report on the war firsthand. KILL THE DUTCHMAN! is the fifth of Sann’s seven works of nonfiction.

Excellent Book on the Dutchman and His Times

This is probably the best book written about crime in the 1920s and 1930s, Dutch Schultz, and his life and times. Author Paul Sann has written a tough and revealing book second to none about this amazing era. A most read for anyone interested in these subjects.

Paul Sann Covers His Subject Well

Paul Sann's effort in bringing back a violent period in America's history is successful in his account of the life of Arthur Fregenheimer, better known to intimates as "Dutch" Schultz, The Beer Baron of the Bronx. A detailed account of The Dutchman's demise is given and those involved in The Palace Bar and Chop House in Newark, New Jersey, in October of 1935. Three of Schultz's cronies in addition to The Dutchman were dispatched in a gunfight in which Charlie Workman shot Schultz in the mens' room. The book is filled with infamous names from the prohibition days in New York's underworld. Author Paul Sann has written other books regarding the post World War I era, and this book on Dutch Schultz illustrates the stressfulness of just staying alive for gangsters during this time period.

This is one of my favorite gangster bios. Dutch Schultz was one of the most colorful and vicious mobsters of the Prohibition era and Sann's lively, tough prose brings the Dutchman vividly to life. No source notes for the more academic-minded readers but take it from me, it's "on the level" as Arthur Flegenheimer would probably say.

The Varo Edition contained unusual annotations by a strange man, Carlos Allende, who claimed to have witnessed the Philadelphia Experiment, and to have been tutored by Albert Einstein. Allende openly suspected Jessup of involvement in the experiment, leading to interesting interchanges, moves, and countermoves.

In these pages, Barker analyzes such correspondences, and deftly navigates the sticky terrain of Jessup's mysterious rise and fall, while raising doubts about the official story. Did Jessup really kill himself, or was it "self-murder?" Or, did Jessup kill his attacker and steal his identity? And was that attacker the real Carlos Allende?

A MUST READ for anyone interested in early ufology and The Philadelphia Experiment.

What an amazing introduction to the sad death of one of the early pioneers of ufology. This book in no way claims to answer what exactly was the cause of Dr. Jessup's death. It touches upon The Philadelphia Experiment, Carlos Allende, and UFO'S and the moon (which today is only beginning to be researched in full). This book was an introduction for me in regards to Dr. Jessup and all the great books he wrote. All of which I have since tracked down, read and been amazed by. It further spurred me on to investigate his death and The Philadelphia Experiment. I had heard of The Philadelphia Experiment before reading this book, but never truly investigated the matter beyond watching the movie. Dr. Jessup through his research into UFOs had many ideas that would later be popularized by others such as Erich von Daniken. This book along with The Jessup Dimension by Anna Genzlinger, Hoax by P.J. Dowers (if you can find it) and The Philadelphia Experiment by Charles Berlitz are all great readings in regards to Dr. M. K. Jessup. This IS an amazing and interesting but sad event. Was Dr. Jessup murdered or did he commit suicide? We may never know the truth, but I am thankful for Dr. Jessup's writings and the world he opened for me. Many of his ideas are only today being proven. The copy I speak of is an earlier edition. This newer edition is even better because it contains supplemental information not available before.

"Most people who knew Dr. Jessup refused to believe that he had committed suicide, a most natural reaction in that the professor had, in his contacts with them, given no indications of depression or of having troubles": so declares Gray Barker in the introduction to his third book.

Two short articles by Jessup are included: UFOs and the Moon (later expanded in his book The Expanding Case for the UFO) and Motive Power of the UFO. A small amount of correspondence to Barker and Meade Layne of the BSRF is included, in which Jessup reveals his interest in the reported mediumship of Mark Probert and his reported spirit contacts.

Barker is indebted to Riley Crabb from the Borderland Sciences Research Foundation for the preface to the Annotated Edition of Jessup's The Case for the UFO, which is reprinted in this book. Barker states that the Navy gave one of 25 copies of the Varo edition to Jessup and Jessup gave his copy to Crabb. The Allende letters are also included. Barker states that Carlos Allende had been living with an elderly couple in a farmhouse. Someone had gone to visit Allende there, but the place had been stripped of all furniture and was deserted. Barker: "If the Allende Letters had been authentic in that they contained solid information, it seems that those who 'knew too much' were soon disposed of. Did Jessup also 'know too much'???????????"

It is a short book and unfortunately there is nothing on the opinions of those who knew Jessup. Barker states that Ivan Sanderson remained tight-lipped on the matter. Instead, space is taken up with reports of a seance to contact the spirit of Jessup. Barker later published a more interesting follow-up, The Jessup Dimension.

A good analysis of the contradictions surrounding the death of Dr. Jessup. I doubt we will ever know the truth, but this book provides both sides of the controversy; whether it was suicide or foul play. The book also gets into other aspects of the Jessup legacy such as UFO's and the Philadelphia experiment. An interesting read but not the final analysis.

"Essential for the Contemporary Reader"

To put it in a nut shell, this dictionary is an invaluable commodity acting as an authoritative and concise companion to aid the aspiring student and teacher to the forefront of psychology as we know it today. This dictionary is affordable, compact, easy to reference, and easy to carry. Some notable features include: new terms and up-dated research, the exclusion of pyschological jargon foriegn to the blossoming student, the many illustrations, graphs, diagrams, and formulae, ultimately complete this rewarding dictionary. Dr. Chaplin's work is highly commendable, and should be considered necessary for the shelves of all within the broad spectrum of the psychological world.

The only possible flaw in this book is that *a few* of the entries might be a little opaque to those who don't already know something about the given topic, but by far most of this book is extremely useful and understandable.
I bought this book as an undergraduate studying for the GRE in Psychology (and yes, I think it did help) and have continued to use it as a doctoral student. It's been helpful at all levels. I recommend it to undergrads who are just interested in psychology, to anyone wanting to brush up on any area of psychology, and to psychologists or psychologists-in-training who want a handy reference to look up new or unfamiliar terms. It contains clear illustrations -- for example, of the eye and of some optical illusions -- and includes a separate list of common statistical formulas, a list of Greek symbols found in psychology, and a list of abbreviations commonly found in psychology.
It has entries for everything from the most broad topics, e.g. "behaviorism", which gets a lengthy encyclopedic-like entry, to the most narrow, e.g. "phobophobia: fear of fearing", "bad trip", and "Barnum effect". It includes biographical entries. It includes many entries concerning statistial analyses used in psychology -- factor analysis, Latin square, rank order correlation, etc. Every aspect of psychology is included here -- the physiological, the psychoanalytic, the behavioral, you name it. All in a very small and concise package -- ordinary paperback size and probably less thick than the latest John Grisham novel.
Each entry leaves you with a good grasp of the basics of the term in question.
This is a good book for picking up and browsing if you're just trying to edify yourself, and it's a good book to have handy if you are surrounded by psychologists (or books) who occasionally hit you with a term you aren't quite sure of or would like to know more about.
Highly recommended.
