About the Author

Balaji Krishnapuram is a senior R&D manager at Siemens Medical Solutions. He earned a Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering from Duke University. His research interests include statistical data mining and information retrieval.

Shipeng Yu is a senior staff scientist at Siemens Medical Solutions. He earned a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Munich. His research interests include statistical machine learning, data mining, Bayesian analysis, information retrieval and extraction, healthcare analytics, and personalized medicine.

R. Bharat Rao is senior director and head of Knowledge Solutions at Siemens Medical Solutions, where was recognized as one of its Inventors of the Year in 2005. He also received the 2011 ACM SIGKDD Lifetime Service Award for pioneering applications of data mining for healthcare. He earned a Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research interests include machine learning, healthcare analytics, mining large data, and personalized medicine.

About the Author

Mike has worked as a system administrator since the early 2000s in a variety of roles, including an ISP, at Greenpeace, and most recently a social media startup. In recent years, he have spent increasing amounts of time working with cloud services such as AWS, which has dovetailed perfectly with his love of automation and scalability.

As well as doing system administration as a day job, he is also building his own AWS-based startup. Cloudfrag provides on-demand game servers and relies heavily on a wide range of AWS services.

Federico Lucifredi is the maintainer of the man suite, the primary documentation-delivery tool under Linux, a graduate of Boston College and Harvard University, and a software engineer-turned-manager at the Novell corporation. Previously, Federico has been a CTO and a network software architect at ’.com’ and embedded Linux startups, and he has spent two years teaching in Boston University’s graduate and undergraduate programs, while simultaneously consulting for MIT. He is a frequent speaker at user group and conference events, notably the OSCON, LinuxWorld and IMPlanet conferences, where he was a panelist representing the Jabber community. Federico is a recognized expert in computing performance issues, and consults pro-bono with Standard and Poor’s clients interested in Free/Open Source Software technical and strategic issues. He participated in the GPL v3 drafting process in the large-corporation panel.

About the Author
Ron Klimberg is professor at the Haub School of Business at Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia, PA. Before joining the faculty in 1997, he was professor at Boston University, an operations research analyst for the Food and Drug Administration, and a consultant. His primary research interests lie in the areas of multiple criteria decision making, DEA, facility location, data visualization and data mining. Ron was the 2007 recipient of the Tengelmann Award for his excellence in scholarship, teaching, and research. He received his PhD from The Johns Hopkins University.

B.D. McCullough is professor at the LeBow College of Business at Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA. Prior to joining Drexel, he was a senior economist at the Federal Communications Commission and an assistant professor at Fordham University. His research fields include applied econometrics and time series, accuracy of statistical and econometrics software, replicability of research, and data mining. He received his PhD from the University of Texas at Austin.

Great guide for beginners and rusty practitioners.

Fundamentals of Predictive Analytics with JMP covers the key concepts extraordinarily well via examples and clever well written explanations. The sections on decision trees and neural networks are especially good and those alone are worth the price of the book. The use of JMPs Graph Builder as well as screenshots makes the text very useful for self teaching and review. The book masterfully strikes the right balance between accessibility for a beginner and thorough enough for an advanced analyst seeking a refresher in key concepts and their deployment with JMP. All in all an excellent book.

Great beginners book for JMP

The book is very helpful. Each chapter spends sometime explaining the underlying concepts and the dives into step by step instructions for performing the actions in JMP. The one drawback is that the in chapter file references don't match up 100% to the downloadable content posted by the authors so you have to do some digging around to figure out what sample data file to use if you want to actively follow along. The authors need to go through and match up the downloaded able content as its described in the book.

Excellent toolkit for parents

I read Smart Parenting Revolution by Dawna Markova a few years ago, and it helped me immeasurably with my two children, both of whom were struggling in public schools. I just picked up I AM Smart and it's a quick, easy read with so many practical tools and different perspectives for understanding my children, and what to do about it to support them in school. Highly recommend for all parents with school-age children.

It really IS wordless

What a cool book! The problem is presented in a cartoon. For instance.. (I have six kids, this is my favorite)... a woman sorting through laundry to wash, trying to separate the colors. Laundry is all over the floor in front of the machine.
The solution: A frame is built which holds six little trash bins, stacked up one on top of the other, so clothes can be sorted into them by color, without taking up much floor space at all. Then the woman is shown, emptying the whites into the washer - no mess!
No words are used but the methods of creating these little organizational solutions are very simple to understand.
I am not a handyman (or handywoman) at all, but I really felt these concepts were clear, and we have used several of the solutions presented.
Other little gems in this book are: drawing paper dispenser, making a 2-pole closet, creating a nice organizer for rakes, shovels and the like, a neat little stand for roller blades, a ball stacker that goes on the back of a door, and even a baby bottle rack.
Every project is simple to do and easy to understand.
I recommend this book for any large family! Some of us just need to have every organizational tool we can get our hands on!!

A Well "Written" Work with a Wealth of Ideas

Doty divides his subject matter into five categories: 1. Cabinents, Closets, & Shelves; 2. Around the House; 3. The Workshop; 4. Sports, Toys, and Entertainment; and 5. The Great Outdoors. Each section contains from six to seventeen individual projects, 60 some odd projects in all.
The projects are set forth in a series of wordless cartoon panels. The first panels state the problem, and the final panels present a simple, easily "engineered" solution to the problem.
The cartoons are well drawn and amusing. The step-by-step directions are understandable and within the capacities of the most inept hammer-mechanic. You can follow the directions exactly, or you can let your imagination soar as you adapt the projects to your specific needs.

When I went to buy one it could not be found an so a couple of years went by an I would think about it when I would see one of the cartoons in the back of a woodworking magazine. Finely decided to look on the internet to see if I could fine one. Got this one an just love it. I have already used a couple of the projects from the book.

You paint a world of despair with a beautiful brush

In a world of plenty and instant gratification lies a window to the underworld we made. Mankind has created a market for flesh, the skin trade in every sense of the word. Instant gratification also means that we can buy sex, and if we don’t want to buy it we can resort to rape, and if we want to escape our pain we can buy drugs. You might live in suburban splendour, but you know there are areas which are dangerous, areas you’d rather your children didn’t go. Have you ever wondered what it’s like to grow up in that danger zone? What’s it like when your dad murders your mom and then becomes your pimp so you can earn him money for his addiction? This is THAT story.

There is a detached air about this novel, as if you are seeing it through a softened lens. What you’ll read may appall you, it may horrify you, and if you have lived a sheltered existence it will break your heart. The authors have done a brilliant job at peeling back the veneer of civilisation to expose the festering darkness living in tandem with yours, the world of crime, where you are either a predator or a victim. There is no middle ground.

Svetlana lives a half life, one where pain and humiliation are her daily bread. The agony and despair she goes through will make you flinch, and then when Dark and Dangerous steps into her life you will rejoice. At last the dark horseman rises, the Goodbye Man, the angel of death. Svetlana is stunted emotionally, trauma will do that to you. She’s a woman-child who knows all about the seedy underbelly of society and how to be ready for penetration, it’s how she earns her ‘daddy’ his money, but she is emotionally naive, she is child-like because she was never allowed to mature, she is locked in her cycle, her neurons are wired that way now.

This story is engaging, it makes you curious, you need to know what happens next. The more you read about Svetlana the more you want to know her story, you need to know if she’ll get out alive, you need to know she’ll be safe and know love.

What is love? Is it obsession? Is it a chemical imbalance? Is it even healthy? In this story it isn’t healthy, it is an imbalance, it is extreme and demanding and debilitating.

I enjoyed it, I needed to finish it, and then it ended on a cliffhanger. So be warned, you will journey through the annals of Hades, you will see the fire, smell the fire, and know its master, and in the end you’ll look down at the leather straps tying you to this book and chew through them. Very dark, very noir, and realistic in the extreme. Romance comes in all shapes and sizes, damaged men rule the world, don’t open this book unless you are willing to see inside their hearts, minds, and souls.

Good and completely disturbing

Two abused prostitutes, an organ harvester, a necrophiliac and a junkie pimp… Sounds like the start of a bad joke. It’s really the main characters of the most messed up book I’ve ever read. Ever.

Svetlana was born to a pimp and hooker. She’s never known a life outside of being abused and used by her junkie father. He sells her for his own addiction. She wishes to die. She wishes to be loved. Her mind is just as, if not more, broken than her body. She doesn’t see herself as anything other than a vessel for abuse and rape. She believes that is what she was born for.

There is a point where Svetlana’s entire world changes. A point where Ceasar and Mateo come into play. They change some things about her existence for the better, others … not so much. Because Ceasar and Mateo are not sane and good individuals either. They live in the shadow’s of the world’s underbelly. They do unspeakable things to people who they hope won’t be missed. They save poor souls, they give life, but they do it with horrific acts.

Ceasar and Mateo both come to love Svetlana. And she them. But these people don’t know how to love. They know screwed up feelings that they don’t understand and they confuse for love.

There is not a single good person in this book. Svetlana comes the closest, but it would take this girl years and years of therapy to truly get there. The Goodbye Man is a tale of the cruelest people, living in the darkest shadows and yet somehow surviving and grasping for the chance at love and acceptance.

The Goodbye Man is written in a way that makes it very easy to get inside of the head of these characters. Which is equally thrilling and disturbing. My only real complaint is that it was, at times, too repetitive. The point was made and then made again and it lead me to skim at a couple of points. Beyond that, this is a fairly well written, completely disturbing, dark ass read that will probably stick with me for a while.

2.5 Sick and Disgusting Stars

I love dark books and this one started out with a bang. I was actually impressed that two authors took a chance and wrote about some of the horrific things that people will do to others in order to gain financial profit. By the time I got halfway through the book I felt there was a lot of repetition.

Lettie; "Others are created for love. Me, I was made for hate. Until I understand what it all means, I can only survive. Surviving is all I have been doing since I was born." I read this and similar statements by Lettie so many times throughout the book that it was starting to irritate me.

Caesar; "Loving her is so wrong, not just for me, but for Mateo too." I can't figure out why Caesar kept going back for more until I got to the worst part which made think, Enough!!!! this man is sick..(view spoiler) This is where I draw the line.

Mateo; "This isn’t supposed to happen to me. I don’t get attached to beating hearts." This guy is the sickest of the sick.

Events were moving very slow during the second part of the book and I considered not finishing it however my curiosity got the better of me. I was very disappointed the book ended with a cliff hanger. Will I read the next book? I highly doubt it!!
