About the Author
Richard J. Gelles received his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of New Hampshire. is the Dean of The School of Social Work at the University of Pennsylvania and holds The Joanne and Raymond Welsh Chair of Child Welfare and Family Violence in the School of Social Work at the University of Pennsylvania. He is the Director of the Center for the Study of Youth Policy and Co-Director of the Center for Children's Policy, Practice, and Research. His book, The Violent Home was the first systematic empirical investigation of family violence and continues to be highly influential. He is the author or coauthor of 23 books and more than 100 articles and chapters on family violence. His latest books are, The Book of David: How Preserving Families Can Cost Children's Lives (Basic Books, 1996) and Intimate Violence in Families, Third Edition (Sage Publications, 1997).

A few words of caution

This is a valueable book but it's also one of the most widely-misinterpreted ones in recent memory. For starters: the infamous half and half quote, wherein Gelles reports that men and women are injured in roughly equal numbers. This omits several facts: that women are being injured far more severely as a result of the size differential between women and their partners; that women are defending themselves in these attacks, and that sexual assault---which is overwhelmingly a feature of amle abuse of women---was deliberately ommitted from the count of violent activities that Gelles counts.

Gelles invented something called the Conflict Tactics Violence Scale, which needs to be noted in research about domestic violence. It counts acts alone, and strips them of their context. Thus, a man like OJ Simpson, who beat his wife Nicole repeatedly during their marriage, would be considered a victim of his wife if she defended herself---despite the fact that he was the aggressor, she the defender, and that he outweighed her by dozens of pounds.

That said, this is a valueable book, and it's useful to read to see how often it's either mis- or selectively quoted by conservative pundits.

Excellent Text

Richard Gelles is a pioneer in the examination of family violence, and this excellent 1997 text (an update of the 1990 edition) provides a detailed and critical analysis of the existing literature. Although much has been published in the area since 1997, this text continues to be worthwhile.

The book focuses primarily on physical violence. Issues such as basic statistics and the societal influence of family violence are explored. One of the most interesting sections discusses the prevalence and nature of intrafamilial violence across cultures. Child mental health professionals will likely benefit most from the sections on child victims of family violence and sibling violence; the latter of which is often ignored in books of this type. One of the final chapters explores relevant treatment issues; however the emphasis is on legal and programmatic approaches, such as arrest of the perpetrator. Individual treatment of persons who experience family violence are not considered in detail.

Most of the information provided is based on hard empirical data; however, Gelles's extensive experience allows him to include rich anecdotal evidence. As a result, the book is highly readable and provocative. Overall, the book is remarkable -- a concise text that explores fully a multitude of issues. The book will be most appreciated by persons in research or academics, although mental health professionals will likely find it useful as well. Finally, the text could be ideal for use in graduate classes, with 'Discussion Questions' and 'Suggested Assignments' at the end of chapters. Highly recommended.

I'm a car guy and it was meh...

I enjoyed the book enough. Paul Ingrassia wrote an interesting enough book and said from the beginning that it was his opinion of what the 15 most important cars have been to the United States. The only problem was that it turned more into a book about the 15 most important makes to the United States than it was about the models. I understand that models often influence the make as a whole (remember the Ford tagline from a few years ago that a single car "could be the pace car for an entire company"?) but I think the way Ingrassia went about weaving this together went a little too far.

The chapter on the BMW 2002 as an example, started with the problems BMW faced in the aftermath of WWII, got to the introduction of the 2002, then followed into the heyday of the 3-series and the yuppies and yuppie psychology. Really? He had a longer discussion of some of the BMW snobbery than he did of the car itself. There is a chapter on the ford truck which brings in discussions of everybody else's trucks. The Honda Accord's chapter talked more too about the manufacturer's range and history than the model. While the subtitle of the book is "A History of the American Dream in Fifteen Cars," I think he could have made the subtitle more about the makes and been more accurate and maybe have then put the story together a little more coherently than what emerged. Finally, as another reviewer noted, there are few errors in the book but I can't recall them now that I am reviewing this about a month after reading; they were not overly glaring and will only be noticed by those who are car crazy themselves.

I did like the book well enough in the end--I am a car guy after all. It is well written for what it is and I will admit to learning a few things through my read.

Great for car enthusiasts!

I had read this book some time ago and recently purchased the audio book because I enjoyed it so much. It is not as good as his other book, Crash Course: The American Automobiles... but entertaining, nonetheless. Sometimes he reminisces too much about songs and TV shows from the era of the car he is discussing, but that is a minor complaint. If you are a car enthusiast, you will enjoy this book. If you hate cars or find them boring, you would not be reading this review in the first place:)

Engines of Change is an OK book. It has more details about 15 cars like the Mustang, Prius, and Cadillacs than you would ever want. For example, did the readers really need to know about the Prius being the featured car on Curb Your Enthusiasm or a funny South Park episode? I think the book was good, but you get bogged down in minutiae and you just feel sick. I agree with the other reviewer that said basically that he tries too hard to be cutesy with his titles and humor (example "From Hitler to Hippies"....and "Baby Boomers become Soccer Moms and a, um, Driving Force in American Politics." The strength of this book is that it is a unique concept: a history book that contains 15 vehicles that shaped American history. The problem is the minute details and just "over doing it" when it comes explaining the stories circling these cars. Just give me the stories without all the BS and I will be happy.

About the Author

Jean Kennedy Smith� is the former United States Ambassador to Ireland and founder of VSA, an international organization that provides arts and education opportunities for people with disabilities and increases access to the arts for all. Smith was named an honorary citizen of Ireland by Irish President Mary McAleese for her contribution to the Irish peace process, and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama in recognition of her service to people with disabilities. The eighth of nine children born to Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy and Joseph P. Kennedy Sr., Smith is a mother of four and the widow of the late Stephen Smith. She lives in New York.

Like a favorite aunt reminiscing about growing up with your famous relatives whom everyone--including her--loves a lot

Having read so many books on the Kennedys--including Ted Kennedy's memoir True Compass: A Memoir and Rose Kennedy's Times to Remember--I wasn't sure what to expect from Jean Kennedy Smith (former ambassador to Ireland), the youngest Kennedy daughter--and the only daughter to write a memoir.

It wasn't exactly what I had hoped for, but I wasn't really disappointed either. Jean Kennedy's memoir is obviously heavily influenced by the family legacy--the knowledge that she is the surviving child of Rose and Joseph Kennedy, whose three sons--and whose family itself--mean so much to so many Americans. With that responsibility in mind, she shares cozy memories, warm and positive ones, of growing up in that family.

Modestly, Jean's memories in this book are all shared with a brother or sister or her parents--except when she goes away to college and her roommate (soon to become her close friend) is Ethel Skakel, who will soon fall in love with and marry Jean's older brother Bobby. Other than that, and meeting her own husband (who also became an important help to her brothers), Jean keeps the family front and center in her memoir--and, of course, she's right, that's exactly who we want to hear about. It's a slim book--more about Kennedys growing up than the political years and decisions--and you won't find any scandals--but there's a quiet charm of days gone by, when even adults played touch football on the lawn near the ocean and evening entertainment was family word games, listening to a radio program, or --for the Kennedy children-- the treat of having their father (at one time a movie producer who helped start RKO studios) bring home a new movie to show to the family and friends in the private screening room at Hyannis Port.

She mentions current events sparsely as needed--the family life in London before the war, when Joe was U.S. ambassador there (the first Catholic ambassador to Protestant England). Historical events are touched on lightly and infrequently; this is a personal book, not a history lesson.

Unlike her brother Ted, Jean doesn't write about the tough school years at a variety of boarding schools for the boys and Catholic school for the girls. Instead, she describes the (possibly over-idealized) summers together on the Cape. Unlike her mother, she doesn't talk about the family struggles of past generations, or say much about the business of Joe or the frequent long travels of Rose. Biographers pointed out that Joe made many decisions for the boys and Rose was closer in many ways with the girls, and that comes through here, too, although Joe still seems the warmer and more affectionate parent. Rose, shows herself as disciplined, a natural (and ambitious) teacher and a mother who wanted her children to use the summer vacations to develop skills in everything from swimming to dancing to tennis to typing--punctuated with a daily hour for reading (Jack loved this; some of the others found it an unwelcome restriction). Both parents were highly aspirational, instilling in their children the importance of family, of learning, of accomplishing important things in life and in not taking their comforts and good fortune for granted.

Rose's memoir will show you a little more the downside--she's honest about hitting the children (Eunice calls it "beating" them) with coat hangers--and her guilt about frequent trips away from home, with Joe taking over many duties, along with the nurses. In her own memoir, Rose and Joe seem very strict, very demanding--high standards and demands mixed with pride and indulgence for their nine children with their high spirits, noise and fun--being sure to keep them unspoiled and engaged in meaningful activities.

Jean loves her parents and her brothers and sisters and has nothing bad to say about any of them. She does, briefly, mention the sad times--her oldest brother's death in the war, her eldest sister's botched lobotomy that left her severely mentally and physically impaired, another sister's fatal plane crash when she was barely 28 years old. Then, of course, she mentions the public service of her three brothers and -- briefly, and without much detail, the assassinations of Jack and Bobby. There's not much here about her own children--she knows we want to hear about Jack and Bobby and Teddy and the fun growing up and how great they were as adults and how she loved and idolized them just like so many of us do still--only Jean was there.

It's a light book, a fast read, with a photo on almost every open double-page, not on special photo paper so its not very well detailed, but they're great to see, and makes it a bit like a scrapbook feeling. Where else will you read about--and see--the Halloween costumes Jackie designed for her and Jean while first lady--so that they could go trick or treating in cognito with their children? Jean relied a lot on her own journals for the stories she shares. If you are a fan of the Kennedy's, her book is not going to tell you anything shocking or (if you've read a lot) much that's new, but it's Jack and Bobby and Teddy's sister--she's the last of their generation, and she wants to tell us about what it was like back then. Seriously, who could resist grabbing a cup of tea and enjoying her memories? , .

I could have skipped this one.

I'm slogging my way through this book. It's a short book ....so what does that tell you? As others have noted it is a happy little memoir. The problem is that life in general is not always a happy little thing. As the world knows that's especially true for the Kennedy family. I feel like I"m reading a long excerpt from a book, not a book itself. Something you'd fine in an old fashioned "women's" magazine. Kennedy talks about the family's idyllic life on the Cape, the love and closeness they felt for each other, all the things her parents did right in raising their brood. That's the good stuff...the world knows all too well the other side of the coin and it is all either simply brushed up against or ignored completely in this book. I did not expect some "Mommie Dearest" type tell all, but this book was not worth my time. I finally just put it on my nightstand, started another book, and now pick this one up and read a few paragraphs now and again...I'll get through it...but I won't enjoy the process.

A disappointing/boring/unrealistic read

Have read about 20% of the book ... a very disappointing/boring read. Too much has been written about the Kennedy family to buy into the information presented in this book ... it feels like it was written through the eyes of a child ... not an 80+ year old woman ... the last Kennedy sibling. Too bad. Don't waste your money on buying this book.

This book presents a broad overview of the field of multimedia production. The book describes the field at large, explaining the concepts, rather than focusing on minute details of using particular software packages. Separate chapters are devoted to the multimedia "building blocks", text, sound, images, and video, and the various special characteristics of these media (such as formats and how compression techniques work). A typology of multimedia authoring software is developed, and brief descriptions of individual authoring packages are provided to exemplify each type. The accompanying CD-ROM contains evaluation copies of many of the packages mentioned (such as Macromedia Director, Adobe Freehand, and SoundEdit) for further exploration by the reader. The book also provides extensive coverage of the multimedia development process, from the roles of the members of a multimedia development team, to planning, costing, producing, testing, and delivering products. I have found the book to be quite successful as a textbook for introduction to multimedia courses. It would also be useful for anyone who would like to understand what the multimedia business is all about.

Getting dated

This has been one of the leading books for the field. Most useful in a advanced HS or College course.

However the material is becoming dated. Needs a newer focus on the new interactive media environment that integrates internet applications rather than thinking of the "web" and "multimedia" as two areas. They have merged!

The book publisher and author needs to study the fields using multimedia such as advertising and the ad agencies, marketing agencies, entertainment agencies, eLearning companies and functions, entire web sites based on interactive multimedia in large companies and so on.

Still has value but will need a lot of field experience to sift through what is current and what is just old history.

He compares DCC with other correlation estimators such as historical correlation, exponential smoothing, and multivariate GARCH, and he presents a range of important applications of DCC. Engle presents the asymmetric model and illustrates it using a multicountry equity and bond return model. He introduces the new FACTOR DCC model that blends factor models with the DCC to produce a model with the best features of both, and illustrates it using an array of U.S. large-cap equities. Engle shows how overinvestment in collateralized debt obligations, or CDOs, lies at the heart of the subprime mortgage crisis--and how the correlation models in this book could have foreseen the risks. A technical chapter of econometric results also is included.

Robert Engle is the Michael Armellino Professor in the Management of Financial Services at New York University's Leonard N. Stern School of Business. His books include "Cointegration, Causality, and Forecasting". He was awarded the 2003 Nobel Prize in economics.

Great Foucauldian discussion of science and state in India

This book is a better example of the use of Foucauldian analysis in a non-Euro/American setting. Prakash's discussion of how the colonial state used science to legitimate its rule, and how the nationalist anticolonial elites redefined and reinscribed science to legitimate their own goals is very thorough. He applies Foucault's notion of "governmentality" to demonstrate how science operated to control and maintain the populace. Highly recommended.

Not Science but more...

This not about science as such, but about the idea of science. This is one of best recent academic books that I have read on modern India. Using science as a window into the culture of modern India, or Indian modernity, Prakash provides a captivating account of how areas ranging from museums to religion to politics were refashioned. The book is also very elegant, starting with the cool cover, the well chosen chapter epigraphs, and chapter titles. You will come away with a very thoughtful, nuanced understanding of how the idea of science entered the constitution of colonial India. One last thing, though Prakash's approach is what would be called "postcolonial," it is solidly grounded in Indian materials while being very stylish. A real treat!
