In 2002 Steven Norquist experienced that final and irrevocable event known as Awakening. Invaluable guide

Are you a seeker of truth? A seeker of enlightenment, awakening, becoming one with your true Self, etc.? Then this book will burst a few bubbles you might have floating around in your brain about what this really means. I was such a seeker once, with no clue what awakening or enlightenment was really all about. There was just this immense pressure to seek and to keep going no matter what. May be this sounds familiar to you? It was like I had this maddening task master living inside, beating at me relentlessly 24/7 saying: "seek, seek, seek". But what was I really seeking? I had no clue. I was insanely driven but had no goal to pursue because I did not know what I was actually after - that was, until I came across Norquist's Haunted Universe.

There it was - black on white - what waking up was really all about. And believe me, it will shock you big time because it has nothing to do with bliss and love and heaven on earth and all that kind of stuff that's scoring big-time as best sellers in today's market place. Take it from "me" - waking up is exactly as Norquist describes.

If you are really serious and can't ignore the call to wake up - as I could not - Norquist's Haunted Universe will be a most treasured guide. It was for "me". It was my "bible" along with a few other books. I highly, highly recommend it.

About life and death--and something more important

For the serious seeker, Haunted Universe is a serious book. For the ripe individual, who the author says is ready at any moment to fall from the tree of delusion, this book is made to shake that tree violently, helping such a borderline person fall into the "feeling/knowing" state prerequisite to Final Discovery.

Can this book deliver? There is one way to find out. It is probably different from every other work you will find on the subject of spiritual enlightenment.

Norquist believes that you can be talked into Ultimate Reality, that you can be led to a Final Awakening. He says also that this is impossible if someone has not already walked every single step up to that final door. He refers to the paradox often and states that no one ever existed or ever would, and that efforts made toward enlightenment are impossible, pointless and indispensable.

Everyone has a unique perspective. Norquist is no different. Except he says things like, "Reality is the sound of a pebble rolling down a hill on a planet in a star system that we will never know." And, "Not only that, there is no higher self, no ultimate being pulling the strings. A look behind the curtain proves: there is no one there! The smoke and mirrors are not hiding anything; there is just smoke and mirrors."

Enlightened people come back to an existence that doesn't exist, Norquist contends, adding, "Enlightenment reveals that the only thing going on in the universe is spontaneous manifestation. No chance and no design. Only perfect, automatic machine-like emergence."

This author designed his book to take you somewhere you have never been. He's offering you a rocket ride. You can't be told, he says; you have to go there. It's profound in its simplicity. Like the quietly-shared changed perspective that all astronauts embody when they return to Earth. "The Truth is the dream of a sleeping rock," Norquist says.

From images of a nebula in the constellation Aquarius referred to as the "Eye of God," to excessive use of white space--many pages in this book contain only a phrase or short sentence--to the progression of the chapters and the ideas contained therein, this work's form and function are singular. Haunted is also the quickest 415-plus-page read you'll ever encounter. I read it in forty minutes. But I might just as easily spend a lifetime on one page or one sentence.

I decided to mark each page where I found something profound or unusual and found that I'd bent over the corner of most pages. Norquist has a shockingly simple perspective on consciousness and the Universe--which he seriously describes as haunted. He says that consciousness IS the universe and that there are no beings in existence experiencing the universe; there is only Universe/Consciousness manifesting spontaneously and perfectly.

Norquist's vision of reality is not at first blush optimistic or self-affirming: "Emptiness is the natural state of reality," he says. "Reality is not intellectual, it is mindless... Once you feel/know it you will be finally free. Don't let anyone deceive you, "you" must disappear." He relentlessly pounds directly through the center of the self--this "delusion" that he says does not exist. Compared to the sun, a candle flame does not exist and in that light, Norquist is affirming an ultimate Self that someone may, against tremendous odds, find themselves to be.

Norquist suffers no fools. He discourages casual readers and talks straight to the few who can hear him. He tells you to play along and suspend disbelief for a while to get the full effect of his "ghost story." After all, he says, his ghost story is actually yours.

Haunted Universe is an attempt to pull or shove you into a perspective that you were incapable of experiencing before, as long as you still called yourself 'you.'

There's also a wall-staring exercise at the end of his book and a couple of bonus chapters that have appeared elsewhere as essays.

I recommend Haunted Universe to any serious seeker of ultimates. Read it often. There's something in this book between and inside the white spaces. Something huge. For the haunted seeker, many books are read but few are chosen. Choose this book.

Provocative, Beautiful and Inspiring!

How do I critique a book that is beyond description? I'll start by saying this is a beautiful book to open at random. Each and every page is filled with photos and text that is sublime. Steven's unconventional teaching is presented and combined in zen like quotes and paragraphs that have the power to enlighten.

Haunted Universe has become one of my favorite books. The quotes are arranged in such a way as to make them tremendously potent. In fact, the author asks you if you really want to read this book! Perhaps not he continues. For some, the best advice is to forget the whole enlightenment thing. I chose to read on, and my life has never been quite the same. As a close friend said after reading it: " It was like a double trigger!" So very true! Just reading the words is an exercise in simplicity and clarity. If you've begun to see the futility of seeking, then you are ready for this book.

The text can be read as a story, but at the same time, it can be picked up and opened to any page, as certain quotes may contain profound insights. It derives it's power from the enormous silence behind the words. Turn a few pages, and you will be moved and inspired, perhaps frightened.

In the beginning, Norquist states he initially had no interest in writing anything about this subject. A few days later, he wrote an article about his experience which became known as: "What is enlightenment, no, I mean really, like what is it?". After reading the article many times over, I have yet to read anything that comes close to what enlightenment is. Also included is another article written for the TAT Foundation.

The last chapter is called "The Practice" and is devoted to helping people achieve a breakthrough. Many of us have gotten close, but remain short of a glimpse into Reality.
One of my favorite quotes by Steven Norquist is: "The Truth can never be believed in, it can only be known." The exercise essentially pinpoints how to achieve the difference between just believing and knowing. To evoke the feeling and knowing state, as apposed to intellectualizing it, can make all the difference in overcoming the barriers that keep us from our own awakening.

The size and quality of this book impressed me. It has the look and feel akin to an art book on spirituality. It certainly doesn't feel like a paperback and wouldn't consider classifying it as such.

A powerful and beautifully put together book! I recommend it highly.

Mrs. Dofka has retired from active teaching but maintains life membership in the Iota Lambda Sigma, professional vocational teaching fraternity, DANB dental assisting certification, and maintains retired status as dental hygienist in West Virginia. She is currently serving in consultation practice and advisory board capacity as well as volunteer activities.

About the Author

Geoff Reiss is Senior Architect with Program Management Group plc. He has extensive experience in the construction industry and has grown into the project management specialism over a varied career.

Paul Rayner After an early career with IBM in Australia Paul Rayner began a lifelong interest in the best ways of managing large scale corporate projects. He was a Commercial Projects Manager for Cybernet Timesharing in the 70’s, and principle of Great Northern Computer Services. After gaining his MBA he joined Logica plc as a Management Consultant, where he worked until his retirement in 2011. He chaired the Association for Project Management’s Programme Management Group, wrote the APM Introduction to Programme Management, and co-authored the Gower Handbook of Programme Management (2006).

He worked extraordinarily hard to improve approaches to portfolio and programme management, cheerfully giving his time to speak at events throughout the world. He was also a committed family man who took great pride in supporting the achievements of his three children. When he knew he was dying of cancer, he was determined to finish Portfolio and Programme Management Demystified, which he wanted to dedicate to them. He died, aged 64, in August 2011.

Donnie MacNicol Utilising his extensive PM experience across multiple industries Donnie leads consultancy, training, facilitation and mentoring assignments for global companies and government departments in developing project and programme leadership. Donnie chaired the Association for Project Management People Specific Interest Group for 10 years to 2011, is a Visiting Fellow at Kingston Business School, an individual member of the Acumen7 professional network and Partner at Synatus.

One of two recommended books on Program Management

Would Buy Again. One of two recommended books on Program Management, the other is Program Management (Fundamentals of Project Management) Michel Thiry. I really find it annoying that you have to keep typing until you have twenty five words in these reviews. I would be inclined to fill out mofe if they would take off this requirement.

About the Author
Cliff Ricketts holds a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Education and a Masters of Education (Administration and Supervision) from the University of Tennessee. He received his PhD in Agricultural and Teacher Education from Ohio State University. The winner of several prestigious awards (including AGR Agricultural Teacher of the Year and FFA Blue & Gold Award), Dr. Ricketts has taught a wide variety of Agricultural Education and Teaching Methods courses over his fifteen-year career. He is currently a Professor of Agricultural Education in the Department of Agribusiness and Agriscience at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

Kristina G. Ricketts was born and raised in Lincoln, Nebraska. Upon graduating from high school, she pursued and graduated with a degree in Agricultural Leadership, Education and Communication from the University of Nebraska- Lincoln. Continuing in the academic line, she moved to Gainesville, Florida and received a Master's degree in 2003, and a Ph.D. in 2005- both from the University of Florida, within the field of agricultural leadership, collaborative leadership and youth leadership development. She is presently an Assistant Professor within the Department of Agricultural Extension Education at the University of Kentucky.

Brings a fresh approach to both Talmud study and Philosophy

This is the book that's noted for the famous quote about how we might be able to forgive some Nazis but never Heidigger. And while that's a great line, it's even more profound in the context of a story about a rabbi that didn't begin teaching again for the last late student - a seemingly inocuous action that had great consequences. While the traditional interpretation (rabbis have greater learning and leadership roles and therefore greater responsibilities) is in line with Levinas' argument, his invocation of Heidigger at once makes the Talmud contemporary and profound.

Every one of his readings of the Talmudic passages (and note that these are aggadic passages. Levinas is humble enough to understand that many better and more learned philosophers have mined the halacha) illuminates the Talmud and the contemporary society, showing how the Talmud is still a revolutionary text despite its long history. Of course, the methodology that he uses and his conclusions are great for those that have no Jewish learning.

I read this book when I was first contemplating a conversion to Judaism and while it spoiled me for some methods of learning, it definitely gave me enough learning to see that I was on the right track. Anyhow, I could gush forever on the importance of this book, but suffice it to say that you should buy it.

When philosophy meets Talmud

Emmanuel Levinas' ethical philosophy is also becoming more known in North America lately - he is very popular in Europe and Israel. He received a "good Jewish education" as a child but was no yeshiva boy. After he moved to France and studied with Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger he developed after WWII his ethical philosophy. At the same time he started to learn Talmud with the mysterious Mr. Chouchani. The combination of his original philosophical thought with his knowledge of Talmud became popular topic of a number of lectures that finally became part of this book. For someone who has never encountered the Talmud it might be difficult to follow his reading and understand some of his original interpretations. It is a very fine example of how to give an ethical reading of an ancient text and make it meaningful for our time.

In the Indian University Press edition of 1994 some of the "page" quotes referring to the Talmudic passages are incorrect which is irritating.

A Philosopher Reads The Talmud

Emmanual Levinas (1906-95) was a contintental philosopher, credited with introducing the thinking of Husserl and Heidegger to France. He was raised in the Lithuanian Jewish community, however, and that heritage became increasingly important to him in the 1930s, culminating in his study of the Talmud following WWII. The nine lectures collected in this volume were originally delivered by Levinas between 1963 and 1975. In the guise of commentaries on specific passages of Talmud, these lectures represent Levinas' attempt to "translate" the values and the concerns of the Talmud into the terms of 20th Century phenomenological discourse.
Levinas' main concern is with the ethical aspect of Judaism, and the universal role it (in its specificity) plays. Each lecture begins with a passage from the Talmud, which Levinas interprets line-by-line. Although the interpretation often strays far afield from the plain meaning (and even, sometimes, beyond the symbolic or didactic meaning) of the passage under consideration, I do not think that the rabbis would disagree with Levinas' conclusions. Most of the lectures ultimately turn to one's radical responsibility to and for the other. It is not enough to be good oneself: "the righteous are responsible for evil before anyone else is. They are responsible because they have not been righteous enough to make their justice spread and abolish injustice." (186) Levinas' interpretation of the story of the Gibeonites is particularly thought-provoking in these times: the Gibeonites demanded talion (a life for a life) for the wrongs done to them by Saul; in doing so, by failing to show mercy toward the other, they excluded themselves from Israel.
Although I found much to think about in these lectures and may reread them, they are *not* easy to follow and are often written in the almost impenatrable prose of 20th Century continental philosophy. The translator, Annette Aronowicz, provides a very useful introduction to Levinas, his thought in general, and what he is attempting to do in these lectures, but even with the introduction, I would not recommend this to someone who has no familiarity with philosophical discussion. Familiarity with the Talmud is not required.

A compelling story of healing after loss

Gary Gray was an exceptional young man with a passion for life, friends, and the mountains. Unfortunately, a tragic accident while climbing Mt. Shuksan in the North Cascades National Park cut short his life. In this personal memoir, Shirley Gray artfully weaves together the strands of a compelling narrative of Gary's life, of the events around the accident, and of the surprising and uncanny circumstances around the discovery of his remains, which many had concluded would never be recovered. This story leaves the reader with a sense that the author turned her grief into a quest for insight and, ultimately, understanding of her loss and the deeper spiritual connection with her son that could never be taken away.

A Personal Message ?

My personal message to Shirley Gray would be a simple "Thank You" for writing this book. And, to Gary, "Thank you, for making your Mum write this book ! " I downloaded Roaring Mountain a couple of hours ago, have just finished reading it and cannot even begin to describe the emotions it provoked.

I had, just this morning, been contemplating the course of my own life, and loss, and was sitting at the computer with no particular intention but to check out the latest free Kindle books and procrastinate, a little more, about finally submitting my own. I generally take a quick look at the titles, read a few reviews, particularly for books that might be of a similar genre to the one I've yet to submit and then, either vaguely encouraged or similarly discouraged, I leave the site and spend the rest of the day and another chunk of my life, procrastinating some more.

I have no idea what drew me to reading the first couple of pages of this book, since I have no interest in mountaineering .. or even in walking up steep hills .. but, having started, I literally could not stop. Shirley writes in such a way as to have you feel she is recounting the story just for you .. and that to take a break from reading it, would be a rude interruption of her son's message to the reader; To this particular reader, the message was, something along the lines of : "A life cut short, is not necessarily an incomplete life."

The many 'coincidences', in this story of life and death, seem to have been the 'nudging' of Gary, encouraging his mother to tell his tale, so that those of us who come across it, might all have the chance to be inspired; Not to climb mountains, perhaps, but to know that, whatever it is we choose to do, if we experience it with the same kind of enthusiasm as Gary did, the personal joy of our own small moments in time might be 'inherited' by others, even by complete strangers, after we have gone.

Thank you, Shirley, for passing on the message. A wonderful read.

This biography appealed to me because it is a story of adventure, of family relationships and a mother's journey through grief. The author speaks frankly without becoming gloomy. Her willingness to "learn to write" and to sort through the intricacies of publishing is admirable. I think anyone interested in climbing or who has experienced grief would enjoy this well-written story.

The author certainly knew what he’s talking about. It seems ages since I started hunting for articles and other information in the net that would give me an idea of what is good and what isn’t in making money online. I am not into quick money making scams in the net nowadays. A decent, passive income is better than trying that annoying get-rich-fast information spoiling the web. I watched a couple of YouTube videos and found a few blogs here and there, but this book is the ultimate source of information for me to start earning money online. The only downside I found about this book is that the book is very long… to the point of me feeling ‘knowledge overload’. The downside is also the plus factor of this book- it was totally loaded with great insights. Apparently, no one will be able to come up with a large amount of writing such as this, as easy as that. I am totally inspired by reading this. I noticed few sentences that were missed out during the editing process, but it is forgivable. The information here is invaluable and exceeded my expectations. It is totally relevant to what I am looking for. Highly recommended to all work-at- home professionals, including those who are contemplating to make money online as additional source of income.

This is not the sort of book I usually buy, but I am very glad that I did. Alan Woods has written succinct and precise instructions with clear reasoning behind the advice. The reader is left knowing exactly what to do to follow the advice and which steps to take first. Most books in the genre feel padded and repetitive, but say very little, but with this book, it is not the case. I love the use of real language, clear points and an organized and well-planned out format. The book is current and up-to-date with the latest products and services; it also provides links to blogs and sites allowing the reader to feel fully informed. I have actually taken the author’s advice, thanks to the easy instructions within, and it has already proved positive. I will definitely be interested to see more of his work.

Timothy Keller was born and raised in Pennsylvania and educated at Bucknell University, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and Westminster Theological Seminary. Introduction

This short book is meant to lay out the essentials of the Christian message, the gospel. It can, therefore, serve as an introduction to the Christian faith for those who are unfamiliar with its teachings or who may have been away from them for some time.

This volume is not just for seekers, however. Many lifelong Christian believers feel they understand the basics of the Christian faith quite well and don't think they need a primer. Nevertheless, one of the signs that you may not grasp the unique, radical nature of the gospel is that you are certain that you do. Sometimes longtime church members find themselves so struck and turned around by a fresh apprehension of the Christian message that they feel themselves to have been essentially "re-converted." This book, then, is written to both curious outsiders and established insiders of the faith, both to those Jesus calls "younger brothers" and those he calls "elder brothers" in the famous Parable of the Prodigal Son.

I am turning to this familiar story, found in the fifteenth chapter of the gospel of St. Luke, in order to get to the heart of the Christian faith. The parable's plot and dramatis personae are very simple. There was a father who had two sons. The younger asked for his share of the inheritance, received it, and promptly left for a far country, where he squandered it all on sensual and frivolous pleasure. He returned home penitently and, to his surprise, was received with open arms by his father. This reception alienated and angered the elder brother greatly. The story closes with the father appealing to his firstborn son to join in the welcome and forgiveness of his younger brother.

On the surface of it, the narrative is not all that gripping. I believe, however, that if the teaching of Jesus is likened to a lake, this famous Parable of the Prodigal Son would be one of the clearest spots where we can see all the way to the bottom. Many excellent studies have been written on this Biblical text over the last several years, but the foundation for my understanding of it was a sermon I first heard preached over thirty years ago by Dr. Edmund P. Clowney. Listening to that sermon changed the way I understood Christianity. I almost felt I had discovered the secret heart of Christianity. Over the years I have often returned to teach and counsel from the parable. I have seen more people encouraged, enlightened, and helped by this passage, when I explained the true meaning of it, than by any other text.

I once traveled overseas and delivered this sermon to an audience through an interpreter. Some time later the translator wrote to tell me that, as he was preaching the sermon, he had realized that the parable was like an arrow aimed at his heart. After a period of wrestling and reflection, it brought him to faith in Christ. Many others have told me that this story of Jesus, once they came to understand it, saved their faith, their marriages, and, sometimes literally, their lives.

In the first five chapters I will unlock the parable's basic meaning. In Chapter 6 I will demonstrate how the story helps us understand the Bible as a whole, and in Chapter 7 how its teaching works itself out in the way we live in the world.

I will not use the parable's most common name: the Parable of the Prodigal Son. It is not right to single out only one of the sons as the sole focus of the story. Even Jesus doesn't call it the Parable of the Prodigal Son, but begins the story saying, "a man had two sons." The narrative is as much about the elder brother as the younger, and as much about the father as the sons. And what Jesus says about the older brother is one of the most important messages given to us in the Bible. The parable might be better called the Two Lost Sons.

The word "prodigal" does not mean "wayward" but, according to Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, "recklessly spendthrift." It means to spend until you have nothing left. This term is therefore as appropriate for describing the father in the story as his younger son. The father's welcome to the repentant son was literally reckless, because he refused to "reckon" or count his sin against him or demand repayment. This response offended the elder son and most likely the local community.

In this story the father represents the Heavenly Father Jesus knew so well. St. Paul writes: "God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself, not reckoning to them their trespasses" (2 Corinthians 5:19 – American Standard Version). Jesus is showing us the God of Great Expenditure, who is nothing if not prodigal toward us, his children. God's reckless grace is our greatest hope, a life-changing experience, and the subject of this book.

"This short book is meant to lay out the essentials of the Christian message, the gospel." So begins Timothy Keller's new book The Prodigal God: Recovering the Heart of the Christian Faith. Keller targets both seekers who are unfamiliar with the gospel and longtime church members who may not feel the need for a primer on the gospel.

Keller's book, as the provocative title suggests, is built on one of Jesus' most famous stories: the parable of the prodigal son (Luke 15). Keller consents that "on the surface of it, the narrative is not all that gripping." But, he contends that "if the teaching of Jesus is likened to a lake, this famous Parable of the Prodigal Son would be one of the clearest spots where we can see all the way to the bottom." Keller has taught from this passage many times over the years, and says, "I have seen more people encouraged, enlightened, and helped by this passage, when I explained the true meaning of it, than by any other text."

The book is laid out in seven brief chapters which aim to uncover the extravagant (prodigal) grace of God, as revealed in this parable. Keller shows how the parable describes two kinds of "lost" people, not just one. Most people can identify the lostness of the "prodigal son," the younger brother in Jesus' story, who takes his inheritance early and squanders it on riotous living. But Keller shows that the "elder brother" in the parable is no less lost. Together, the two brothers are illustrations of two kinds of people in the world. "Jesus uses the younger and elder brothers to portray the two basic ways people try to find happiness and fulfillment: the way of moral conformity and the way of self-discovery." Both brothers are in the wrong, and when we see this, we discover a radical redefinition of what is wrong with us. "Nearly everyone defines sin as breaking a list of rules. Jesus, though, shows us that a man who has violated nothing on the list of moral misbehaviors may be every bit as spiritually lost as the most profligate, immoral person. Why? Because sin is not just breaking the rules, it is putting yourself in the place of God as Savior, Lord and Judge just as each son sought to displace the authority of the father in his own life." As these quotes hint, Keller's exposition of the two sons lays the groundwork for a penetrating analysis and critique of both moral relativists on the liberal left and religious moralists on the conservative right, showing that the latter are just as lost as the former. What both need is Jesus, whom Keller presents as "the true elder brother," the one who comes to our rescue at his own expense. Through his grace, we are given hope and invited to the great feast of the Father.

As with Keller's preaching, this book is intelligent and winsome, combining thoughtful reflection on both text and culture with searching heart application. Keller's book is effectively illustrated with a liberal use of stories and quotations from literature, movies, and the arts. Most imporantly, the book orients the reader's heart to the hope of the gospel of God's grace revealed in Christ.

One more note: for readers who may have felt intimidated by Keller's recent book The Reason for God, don't shrink away from The Prodigal God. It is probably only 1/3 of the length and much easier to read. I highly recommend it to unbelievers, seekers and established Christians.

The 2 lost brothers

Salvation by sheer grace has an infinite cost. This book shows that in the parable of the prodigal son, both sons are lost. The younger son didn’t really care about the father; he just wanted his share to spend it on wild living while the elder son was obedient and compliant so that he was his own savior. They were both alienated from the father. The point of the parable is forgiveness involves a price. When the younger son was received he was fully restored to the status of heir once again, therefore the now depleted property was all the elder brothers so the elder brother had to pay for the younger brothers restoration.

This book was an excellent example of the out of the box thinking. It encourages the reader to examine our inner-heart motives. We must determine to live out the changes the gospel creates in our hearts otherwise our hearts will go back to the default mode of religion. In reading about the character of the elder brother I realized he displays narcissistic traits. So check it out.

A Good Read and Good for Sermons

A lot of the books I read on here are for my personal study, and my personal interests, hence the chess books, but this book was for a sermon series that I have developed on the Prodigal Son parable. I have planned a years worth of sermons, so before I start a new series of lessons, I begin to read about the topic. This was why I selected to book. I wanted to blend something that was popular level with some scholarly reading on this parable. This book was insightful, and practical, and easy to read. I have never read any of Keller's material before, and left this book impressed. He is a good author, and does his homework in the text. The book tells the story of the Prodigal Son, though he notes that this is perhaps not the best title for the parable. The book looks at the major characters of the parable, which was helpful because that was the way I developed the series of lessons. He does a good job of highlighting the point of the parable within the attitude of the older brother, and using some of Willimon's material, of preaching to the baptized, this created a lot of connection to the text. A lot of the people in church will agree with the sinner coming home, but demonstrating the attitude of the older brother is the common sin in numerous church pews. The book does a good job of bridging the ancient social context with the modern world. This book helped with the sermon series and it would be a good book just to read on its own. It is short, interesting, and good.
