About the Author
Bree Kessler has always been a traveler. She's lived in India and Honduras, worked in Thailand, volunteered with the National Park Service in northern Alaska, and traveled extensively throughout Latin America.

Her first visit to the Big Island of Hawai‘i was as a summer volunteer, picking pineapples on an organic farm. This experience sparked her interest in urban agriculture and ultimately environmental psychology-the study of how people and places interact with one another. She is currently earning a PhD in this field at the City University of New York.

Bree has taught courses on a variety of topics at Hunter College, the University of Hawai‘i-Hilo, and the School for International Training. Outside of academia, she has a second career as a freelance writer. Her work has appeared in publications such as Honolulu Magazine, Edible Hawaiian Islands, Women's Adventure, and Wine Enthusiast. Exploring the Big Island of Hawai'i with Bree Kessler

1. When is the best time to visit the Big Island to avoid the crowds?

September, October, March, and May tend to be less crowded times. If you want to stay away from crowds, definitely steer clear of the standard school break times.

2. What’s a must-do activity for first-time visitors?

It’s easy to go from winter to summer in one day on the Big Island. For those looking to cool off, a trip to Mauna Kea to observe the nighttime sky is a must-do. For those craving the classic warm temperatures of Hawaii, check out the view at Waipio Valley and if you feel motivated, walk down the near vertical road to the beach at the bottom.

3. Name of a few of the best beaches, in your opinion.

There is a beach on the Big Island to fit every personality. Some beaches offer much more shade than sun, some are completely desolate, while others make you feel like you’re right in the action. Manini’owali Beach in Kona is a beach that is easy to access and allows for great people watching. The Mauna Kea beach in Kohala is a public beach that offers visitors the same waterfront as guests staying at the resort at the same time (without the price). Punalu’u Black Sand Beach in Ka’u isn’t the best beach for swimming, but you can’t find a better spot for a picnic and to see turtles nesting in the sand.

4. What are the best gluten-free and vegetarian food options on the island?

Check out Island Naturals Grocery Store chain (in four locations throughout the Island) for all kinds of gluten-free, vegan, and sometimes raw goodies. Kalani Oceanside Resort in Pahoa has a daily lunch and dinner buffet with tons of gluten-free and/or vegan options. Check out my Moon guide for more recommendations on where to find gluten-free pizza, crepes, and traditional mochi treats made from sweet rice flour.

5. Is the weather actually beautiful year-round? Do you have a favorite season?

The weather is wonderful all year, but a Big Island fun fact is that it has 11 of the world’s 13 climate zones. This means that you can go from the tropics to the desert to a snowy landscape all within a few hours—nearly all year round!

6. If a traveler is craving privacy and a secluded spot to relax, what’s your recommendation?

It’s surprisingly easy to find privacy and seclusion on the Big Island as long as you stay away from the bigger cities. The beaches dotting the very south coast of the island, like Manuka Bay near “South Point”, require four-wheel-drive to reach—but that’s how you know they are great places to seek solitude.

7. Where do you consider the best place to stay on a budget?

If you’re on a strict budget, the best place to stay is in a tent or cabin that you can reserve on the state park website. If you’re seeking a bed, there are some great hosteling choices in Hilo. If you’re looking for something more private, there are several bed and breakfast options on the Island that offer great deals and they include breakfast! For a large group of people, rent a condo in Puna or North Kohala for great views and lots of space for the whole family (or friends).

8. What’s the best drive to take to tour the island?

There is only one road that circumvents the island (note: the name of the road changes as you go around from Hwy-11 to Hwy-19). You can circle the island without stopping in just half a day or take a full day (or longer) and make some stops along the way.

9. Name a few of your favorite local dishes.

Spam musubi (from 7-11), mochi (from Two Ladies Kitchen), and poke (from KTA grocery store).

10. Where’s the best place for hiking and volcano sight-seeing?

The Big Island offers a range of hikes: those that are do-able for a novice hiker (or experienced sitter) as well as hikes that are extremely technically difficult. In Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, there are both types of hikes. Novices can walk around the Crater Rim or walk down into Mauna Iki (where lava once spewed forth). Experienced hikers should try the moonscape of Mauna Lau. The best place to view the lava glow at night is from the Jaggar Museum overlook.

11. Where can travelers visit to have a truly local experience?

Take the bus and ride with the locals! Or hang out on Coconut Island or Richardson’s Beach in Hilo during the weekend.

Plenty of good info here. We went to a couple of places (including the waterfall on the cover) based solely on the book's description of them, and we were very glad we did. Moon books seem to be among the best guidebooks out there.

I bought basically every available guidebook when planning my trip to the Big Island, and this one was the best by far. My favorite feature was the "Your best day in [fill in the blank region of the Island]" which gave recommended activities and places to eat in each region. I prefer to buy multiple guides and get varying opinions, but if you are only going to buy one book about the Big Island, this is the one.

Big Island planning guide

The Moon guide is a good resource for planning a trip to the big island. I ordered it for my Kindle so that I could have it available on our upcoming trip. In the past I've always taken the book itself on trips and found them too heavy to deal with. Unfortunately, going back and forth on the Kindle in the planning stage is somewhat frustrating. I found that I used the Big Island pages of a Hawaii guide more than the Kindle even though the Moon guide was probably a much better guide. I think the Kindle edition will be very useful though, once we get to the Big Island.

Michelle Stewart always knew in her heart that her eating disorder would kill her. What she didn’t expect in its early stages was that she would continue to function - albeit far from optimally - for decades before succumbing to its deadly effects. A conscientious and ambitious woman driven by a desire to make a positive difference in the world, Michelle went on to build a successful career first in journalism and then in communications for the British Columbia Ministry of Health. Michelle devoted her working life to raising awareness of healthcare issues, all the while hiding her own anorexia and bulimia from friends and colleagues. By the time she was 48 years old, more than thirty years of self-imposed starvation, binging and purging had ravaged her organs. In May 2013 she was diagnosed with end-stage renal failure and given only a few months to live.

Determined to come out of the shadows and share her story while she still had the chance, Michelle began writing a very personal and revealing blog in which she chronicled her lifelong struggle with her eating disorder and her experiences as a palliative patient within the very same healthcare system in which she had performed her life’s work. “I have had a 32 year dress rehearsal for the fate I now face,” she writes. This memoir is a collection of the most poignant pieces of writing from that blog, supplemented with previously unpublished pieces of original poetry from the author.

Michelle Stewart’s book stands out against other eating disorder memoirs in several ways. As a middle aged longtime sufferer, she belies the notion that eating disorders only affect the young - or that victims tend to either recover or perish early. I wish the author had spoken more to her struggle with the eating disorder/the years that led her to the state she was in. The majority of the book was, as I suppose the title states, a documentation of the last year of her life/her process of dying. It was a sobering read but I think a very important one at the same time, offering a different perspective from most memoirs and shedding light on the reality of how these disorders often end.

Naval Theory

This book is Naval Classic and a counterpoint to Alfred Thayer Mahan's "The Influence of Sea Power Upon History". Where Mahan was "big navy" and big sea battle proponent and stated that control of the seas was essential for national success and survival, Corbet's view was that you did not need to control all the seas, you only needed local superiorty in the areas that were vital to you. You just needed to control sea lanes of communication. Thus, you could succeed with a smaller navy, if used wisely. A second point of Corbets that was ignored by Mahan is the utility of naval forces in the support of land operations and the advantages of having an amphibious (ship to shore) capability. That's why this book is required reading at Marine Corps schools. It's kind of a dry read and although very pertinent in the 20th century, it seems less so now with fewer and fewer nations investing in large, expensive navies. This book, originally published in 1911, has influnced several generations of naval officers and thinkers. The kindle edition is easy to read and is searchable, thus you can find needed passages quickley.

A good book on Naval Stategy, but a tough read

Corbett has some excellent concepts on Naval Stategy. The big war winning battle is fine - if you can get it, most are flukes. The Navy needs to control the sea lanes especialy at choke points and be able to use blockades for attrition. His concept of using expeditionary forces to place a landing on enemy territory was one of the great ideas of breaking the Land-Sea barrier. His concept of suborinating the Navy on occation, under the Army is a practical idea, but not a reality in a democratic society. He also writes at length on Limited War and its uses. The books problem, at least with me, was the archaic lauguage of the 1900's Corbett with archaic legalese arguments to get to and discuss a point. This was a subject I was truly interested in and found my self starting a paragraph off well, only to catch myself ending up reading words. It's a bear to plow through, maybe not as bad as Clausewitz's latter chapters in "On War", but one can't help make that connection while going through the process. Great content, but the presentation is out of our time. Academics must love these old reads, keeps them on a payroll to explain what the author(s) actually said.

British Maritime Strategy, 1911

Julian Corbett's original title for this work was, "The Principles of Maritime Strategy" but he changed it in the interest of political correctness. Corbett's work expands on the theories Carl von Clausewitz discussed in his book, "On War", applied them to the maritime environment, and refined them to guide the Royal Navy. Unlike Clausewitz, Corbett was not shy about discussing the use of technology in maritime operations. Corbett's ideas took root with Admiral Sir Jackie Fisher and a small group of officers in the Royal Navy, and were at least partially responsible for the emphasis on battleship and battle cruiser development, circa WW I. Corbett, a civilian, was disliked and excoriated by a great many naval officers, who thought he had no business proposing strategy. One of Corbett's previous works was less than complimentary about Admiral Nelson at Trafalgar, which didn't earn him any friends at the Admiralty. After the lackluster Royal Navy performance at the World War I Battle of Jutland, Corbett again came under criticism. Corbett will inevitably be compared to his contemporary, US Navy Captain A. T. Mahan. Corbett's "Some Principles . . " probably did not get the same wide, accepting audience as Mahan's "The Influence of Seapower Upon History" and that's too bad. Corbett's work is well written, well thought out, and original.

Russia's Finest

This novel is a little-known classic by the Soviet Union's masters of political science fiction. It examines the paradox of a future human society whose leaders feel (with some justification) that they are justified in meddling with less fully-developed civilizations, but who fanatically resists any external interference with their own. How the Soviet censors failed to recognize the element of self-reference in the narrative boggles my mind. The story is a personal drama, too, though, of the staunch "anti-progressor" Toivo Glumov, who begins by suspecting that a race of super beings is messing with human history, and ends, paradoxically, by...

...well, better not blow the ending. But please drop everything and read this book as soon as you can. It's as good as anything by Asimov, Stapleton, Sterling or Stephenson.

Haunting

I agree with the previous reviewer. The Strugatskys are as good as Clarke and Asimov at their best. I was a little unsure about this book because the story is presented as a series of reports and memoirs (unlike Hard to be a God which I read first). However, the writing is top-notch throughout. It is a cerebral book. The ending is haunting. I continue to think about it.

Great ending to the series- very emotional

Jonah and Sienna’s relationship has been touched upon in previous books, where it is apparent that out of all of them, Jonah has the darkest demons to fight. And we do find out what these demons are- this book is about bittersweet moments where we discover what has happened to him and the trauma he has suffered, but also the strong and intense link he forged with Sienna early in their lives, a connection that has helped him survive.
She is perfect for him; out of all of them, he is the one hero who deserves someone so sweet and caring. Jonah’s efforts to overcome his demons are heroic; he is truly single-minded in ensuring he is worthy enough for Sienna before he is willing to take their relationship to the level he wants and needs, even if it means he has to put her out of his life while he struggles to get there. When they do get there, though, the sheer intensity of his feelings towards her is heart warming- she really does mean everything to him.
A book of extremes- it couldn’t really be anything else with a hero like Jonah- I found myself laughing at times, but other parts were heart-wrenching and I found myself welling up. This book is a highly satisfactory end to what has been a great series.

Oh wow! I really thought that Adam was my favorite Stark, I was wrong. Jonah.... I feel like I should be able to just say his name and that's all you need to know about WHY you should read this book. And Sienna she was awesome.
OK so, I was nervous because really we knew hardly anything about Jonah except that he had it rough as a kid (and I mean ROUGH) and came to live with the Stark's but he still struggled even though he had a great set of parents just wanting to love him. Sienna was also a bit of an unknown, since all we knew was she lived behind the Stark's and was friends With Ava and in love with Jonah. We didn't really know her story.
They both are meant for each other. She just wants to love him and he just wants to be good enough for her. Their story is fast paced and never did I find myself skimming. I was very excited to see all our Burnout favorites and get a bit if mystery towards the end with "Rapid City Rampage". But the end oh man the ending tore me up. It was perfect, full circle. I will certainly miss the Stark family and our Burnout crew but Iccan't wait for Preacher!

A good end to this series..

I really liked this book. I liked seeing this obviously troubled young man grow up and find his rightful place in his family, to allow himself to be loved, and to love a good woman and finally get his HEA. The story allows us to see that they have been in love with one another for years, but it took that long to be ready for each other. I enjoyed seeing the Burnout crew glimpses. I think this book was the best one in this series. Stronger was a good end to this series.
