About the Author
Hans Fallada was one of the best-known German writers of the twentieth century. Born in 1893 in Greifswald as Rudolf Wilhelm Adolf Ditzen, he took his pen name from a Brothers Grimm fairy tale. His most famous works include the novels Little Man, What Now? and The Drinker. Fallada died from an overdose of morphine on 5 February 1947 in Berlin. Michael Hofmann is the author of several books of poems and a book of criticism, Behind the Lines, and the translator of many modern and contemporary authors. Penguin publish his translations of Kafka's Metamorphosis and Other Stories and Irmgard Keun's Child of All Nations.

A true modern classic set in Wartime Germany. Quite brilliant

Staggeringly written in 24 days and first published in German in 1947, Alone in Berlin is without doubt a modern classic. Inspired by the real-life activities of Elsie and Otto Hampel, the heart of the book relates the plight of two, decent, hard working Germans living in Berlin, who, on hearing of the death of their only son on the front line, begin a small scale campaign of anonymous postcards attacking Hitler and the Nazi regime throughout Berlin. The scale of the effort may be small, but the price to be paid for discovery is almost certain death.

But Alone in Berlin is much more than this story of the Otto's postcard campaign and the attempts of the Gestapo to discover his identity. There are a whole host of people to whom we are introduced, and Fallada poignantly portrays their plights in touching detail. This would be a terrific novel in any hands, but when you consider that Fallada remained in Germany throughout the war (unlike so many other writers) you realise how true to life some of these fictional events must have been.

The new translation by Michael Hofmann is totally convincing - with only the very occasional word that seems to jar, but with subtle changes of tense and styles, he ensures that the story is fast paced and gripping throughout.

Ir's very much in the `classic' style - I was particularly reminded of some of the great Russian classic novels in terms of style. It's a compelling read and takes you through a range of emotions - from uplifting one minute, to despair another. But it's about people holding onto their beliefs and values in the face of every opposition possible.

This edition also has an afterword about the author and copies of some of the original wartime documents from the original Hampel case. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. If you enjoy classic fiction, this is a `must read'.

Dark, satirical war-time thriller

Hans Fallada was the nom de plume of one Rudolf Ditzen, a German novelist whose best known work is probably the Great Depression novel, "Little Man, What Now?", written in 1932 which in its day was a great international success, even leading to a Universal Pictures film adaptation in 1934. Jeder stirbt f�r sich allein ("Alone in Berlin" also published in the USA as "Every Man Dies Alone") was Fallada's final novel, extraordinarily written in just 24 days in October and November 1946, being completed but not published by the time of the author's death in February 1947. The book takes as its basis the true war-time story of Otto and Elise Hampel who over a period of three years baffled both the Police and the Gestapo by distributing hundreds of postcards all over Berlin, urging acts of civil disobedience and work-place sabotage. Despite the ineffectiveness of their propaganda campaign -- all but a few of their cards were handed into the authorities within hours -- the couple nevertheless enraged the Gestapo, who became convinced that the cards were the work of a large and well-orchestrated underground conspiracy, rather than just two people working silently and alone.

Having himself lived through the privations of the Nazi years and suffered their strictures at first hand (particularly as he was not exactly in favour with the Party) Fallada writes with a great incisiveness and authority, not only in his portrayal of officials of the state but also in his depiction of the behaviour of everyday people. "Alone in Berlin" is in part satirical and in part invective but is never less than a highly humanist examination of the times, as well as an honest and frank exploration of the depths to which many Germans had to lower themselves simply in order to survive. Fallada portrays the Nazi Party bigotry and corruption as absolute, permitting not the smallest spark of human decency to remain unpunished. He points up the way in which those few who daily struggled to maintain even a semblance of humanity were left feeling so very much alone and isolated; a state in which they perforce maintained themselves or else perpetually risked denouncement, to be followed inevitably by interrogation, incarceration and possibly execution. And yet isolated pockets of human decency did abound, albeit working in small and quiet ways to try to derail the Fascist hegemony, however futile and dangerous their gestures might actually be.

"Alone in Berlin" is a compelling and totally gripping tale, initially of suspense and later of self-discovery and redemption. Fallada portrays at length the mean and petty lives which the Nazi political system created, as well as the hopelessness experienced by many in war-time Berlin; the author fair revels in the crass incompetences and internal bickerings of the authorities which for so long kept them from tracking down the conspirators. Many of the small details of the book are partly auto-biographical -- particularly many of the internal struggles of its weaker characters, as well as their experiences at the hands of low-level Party officials and rank-and-file fanaticism -- mirroring as they do Fallada's own personal experiences of those years. Many of the characters -- especially those in positions of power -- come across now more as caricatures or as comic cartoon characters more than as real, solid people but this was probably the way they appeared within an entire nation which had collectively been forced to bury not just its sanity but a great portion of its humanity as well.

This English translation is newly prepared by Michael Hofmann and is a joy to read, capturing in highly idiomatic (contemporary) language Fallada's deadpan delivery of events, whether they be of great brutality or simpering banality. Above all, it comes across as fresh and vibrant, accentuating Fallada's wicked black humour perfectly.

About the Author

Maureen A. Knechtel, MPAS, PA-C, received a bachelor’s degree in health sciences and a master’s degree in physician assistant studies from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She has spent her clinical career as a physician assistant specializing in general cardiology and cardiac electrophysiology. She teaches EKG recognition and interpretation to both physician assistants and nurse practitioners and has been a guest lecturer nationally and locally on topics including chronic angina, ischemic heart disease in women, hypertension, and mixed hyperlipidemia. Maureen is a fellow member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants and the Tennessee Academy of Physician Assistants, and is currently an assistant professor and principal faculty member with the Milligan College Physician Assistant Program.

Easy to Read, Concise, Great for Grad Students

This book stands out as easy to read, very concise and good for grad students or those looking to master the EKG. There was good use of graphics for those who are more of a visual learner, yet plenty of text explanation for those who prefer that method. As someone who works in medical education, I would recommend this book for coursework or for those who need to have a reference on their book shelf for continuing education.

This text is a perfect guide for both nurse pracitioners and physicians assistants who desire to develop a comprehensive understanding of EKGs. The format of the book is well organized into coherent parts and chapters that follow a practical and meanginful sequence. It offers the reader a concise and easy-to-read manual that facilitates mastery of reading EKGs. Diagrams are extremely helpful and well placed. Perfect text for both graduate students and those who currently practice in the cardiovascular field. Review questions at the end of each chapter allow opportunities for the student to summarize and clarify main points before moving on to the next section.

Essential book for mid levels. I have been in the cardiology field for 6 years and this book has helped me become confident in rhythm patterns I have had difficulty interpreting in the past. Very concise and easy to understand. This will be the only EKG book you will need.

Basically a 'Gann fan' trading system

The author describes a Gann fan as his main method of reading charts and trading. The problem with this type of 'chartist' technical trading is that it is very subjective. Should I draw my line here or there? When you are drawing support lines with the benefit of hindsight, prices seem to magically line up with those lines. Doing this in realtime however is a very different story. A quick look at a a few randomly chosen points in time on a gold chart, and I saw nothing that remotely worked like what the author described.

The book is written with poor grammar and so is a little painful to read. Coupled with such statements as "95% success rate" and "your first million" and I'm forced to cringe. Not worth a read even if you're getting it for free via kindle unlimited.

Interesting, often novel, and useful (4.5 stars)

Thom Brooks' book _Punishment_ is an interesting, often novel, and very useful contribution to the philosophical literature on punishment. It is useful both in its clear and fair discussion of rival theories and approaches to punishment, and in its discussion of how Brooks' own "unified" theory of punishment would apply, and have practical implication, in a number of areas of criminal law. (Brooks considers capital punishment, juvenile offenders, domestic abuse, and sexual crimes.) Much legal philosophy, even philosophy of criminal law, is quite abstract, so it was useful and interesting to see Brooks apply his account to concrete and important problems, including some that are often overlooked by philosophers. This is perhaps especially likely to make the book attractive to students, but its of use to "professionals", too.

Three aspects of the book stuck out to me as particularly novel and interesting. First, Brooks' own account of punishment, his so-called "unified theory". This is distinct from traditional retributivist and deterrence approaches, and attempts to include aspects of both, as well as other desirable elements. I'll admit that I wasn't completely convinced that the approach worked, but it's an important new view that should be considered by people working in the field. The second novel element was the use of ideas drawn from the British Idealists. This once-dominant school of thought was largely forgotten for several decades, but is now making a come-back, with many important philosophers drawing on and making use of their work. Brooks is a leader in this area, and this book makes an important contribution to the claim for continuing relevance for the British Idealists. Finally, and most interestingly to me, Brooks develops a notion of "stakeholding" that he uses to explain how punishment theory fits into a larger political theory. As he says, "The idea of a the stakeholder society is the idea that each individual citizens believes he or she has some significant stake in the political community and its continuation." This idea, which is at least partially distinct from Brooks' "unified theory" of punishment, suggests an important way to think about the function and goal of punishment and the criminal law in general. I think it is likely to be highly fruitful and useful for people working in the field, whether they accept Brooks' larger view or not.

The book isn't perfect, and if it were possible on Amazon I'd give it 4.5 starts. Most of my complaints are minor. The discussion of Hart and Rawls is generally very good, though I' m not convinced it gives quite the right weight to some distinctions Hart makes. (I think almost no one gets this quite right, so it's not a big drawback here.) While the discussion of restorative justice was very interesting and moved the debate further, I wasn't convinced that the potential serious drawbacks of community involvement were taken as seriously as I would have liked them to be. But, these are relatively minor flaws in a book that is fairly short. It's a very well done work deserving of serious consideration by both students and punishment theory professionals.

An Indispensable Work on the Topic of Punishment

Thom Brooks is an Anglo-American philosopher of law and politics at Durham University in the United Kingdom who seeks in his work to exemplify the very best of academia both in scholarly excellence and practical impact. This book superbly embodies both. This monograph on the judicial concept of punishment is a model of spare and clear prose allied with carefully constructed and richly cited reasoning as well as a nuanced pronouncement on the topic that deserves careful study by those involved in constructing public policy and the judiciary itself. As someone involved with the law community (I serve on a district committee of the Wisconsin Office of Lawyer Regulation) I have recommended it to lawyers and bench judges with good feedback. It is an excellent book on the meaning of the applications of punishment, and deserves to be cast centrally in the ongoing debate of the concept of punishment and its function in society.

After a thorough introduction to the topic of the book, wherein Brooks wisely embraces a broad definition of punishment as "the response to crime," he deftly surveys the classic theories of punishment in scholarly and critical detail. Retributive, deterrent, rehabilitative, expressivist, and restorative theories are considered, along with one of his own, which he dubs "a unified theory of punishment," recently recognized by Research Councils UK as one of the 100 "Big Ideas" for the future. The rest of the book carefully compares and contrasts the various theories against some of the thorniest kinds of cases of punishment: capital punishment, juvenile offenders, domestic abuse, and sexual crimes (sexual assault on adults and children). This latter portion of the book is particularly relevant to discussions of punishment as a matter of public policy as it is bolstered by plentiful references to empirical data to support various points and criticisms. Certainly the backbone strength of this book is that while it is a detailed and sweeping philosophical examination of its topic, it always remains in touch with real-life data to constrain speculation.

Brooks' unified theory deserves special consideration by the reader. He is careful to distinguish it from hybrid views that attempt to combine various classic theories and defends it from the charge it is merely a pragmatic hodgepodge of different goals of punishment. Its inspiration is from diverse sources, including Hegel, the British Idealists, and particularly the American Law Institute's Model Penal Code of 1962 (and as revised later). What the unified theory attempts to do is provide a sorely-lacking theoretical support structure for the Model Code that complies closely with many of its recommendations. One important part of that theoretical structure is an emphasis on restorative justice, wherein all "stakeholders" in criminal justice--victims, offenders, and the public--attempt by a form of contractual agreement to restore damaged, disregarded, or obliterated individual rights, which Brooks places at the center of the concept of what constitutes criminal action. While restorative justice does have various difficulties (particularly heinous crimes, incorrigible offenders, victims unwilling to participate in the process, etc.), Brooks makes a good case that these can be overcome in many cases. He also makes a strong case (again backed with data) that sheerly in terms of economic costs an emphasis on restorative justice might steer many countries, particularly the US, away from the disastrous investment in prisons they are now making to house burgeoning numbers of long-term inmates. (Aside: my own state of Wisconsin presently spends more on prisons than on higher education, which is very alarming.)

Besides the obvious audience for this book--lawmakers, judges, lawyers and philosophers of law and students of such--another important group of readers I strongly recommend for this book is one I'm deeply involved in--philosophers and neuroscientists involved in action and free will theory. Too often discussions of human action in relation to moral and criminal activity are simply unaware of theories and positions on juridical responsibility and punishment beyond well-known ones like retributivism and deterrence. This excellent work will go a long way toward remedying that deficiency.

Punishment could be a good book, but it isn't

Punishment could be a good book, but it isn't there yet. On the positive side, it does provide an accessible overview of philosophical theories of punishment. It also provides an insightful gloss on four case studies that are well worth considering. The discussion of stakeholders is very good, and sheds light on the problems that face policy-makers, and how policy can be irrational. In my view, this is the strongest aspect of the book. It is also a plus that Brooks is versed in both philosophy and public policy.

On the other hand, the level of argument is often rather glib. The discussion of retributivism is far too brief. Kant is mentioned almost parenthetically. Mill's critique is treated as a "common confusion" rather than a serious argument. Of course it is just an introduction but perhaps retribution deserves two chapters?

The chapter on Feinberg & Duff leaves the reader wondering why these views have attracted so much attention.

Brooks' "Unified Theory," is astoundingly vague and fails to express any genuine theory of punishment, at least as stated. The unifying aspect is that the word "rights" enters into any justification. Hence, punishment is justified when it is punitively proportionate to the rights violation (retribution), or when it deters future rights violations (deterrence), or when it is restorative of community rights (restorative justice), or rehabilitates the criminal into a rights-respecting citizen (rehabilitation theory). Is this a unified theory? Why not just accept value pluralism?


Nor is it at all clear that rights are always relevant. Brooks argues, contra Feinberg, that parking fines are a form of punishment, but he never explains how failing to deposit another dime in a timely manner violates anyone's rights. The theory implies that punishing victimless crime is unjust. I know some folks who would argue for this claim, but one would still think an argument in order, especially for mala prohibita crime.

Finally, the book is premised on the claim that all punishment is legal punishment. Talk of parents "punishing" a child, or whatnot, is loose speech or metaphor. Brooks warns that such cases can distort our intuitions about legal punishment. But even if this is true, one could distinguish between legal and nonlegal punishment. Further, there is often much we can learn from our nonlegal intuitions, especially concerning our desire to punish -- a topic not often touched on in this book. "Mom, will I be punished for this?" "No, dear, you will not be actually punished -- you'll only be `punished' in the metaphorical sense of being beaten and getting no dinner." This move might beg the question against retribution or Jean Hampton.

Okay, for as long as I've been reading m/m, this book has been on my to read list just because everyone raves about it. When i saw the audio was available, I knew that it was time. And now I get it...just why everyone loves this book. It's a fascinating story about the unlikely romance between two heroes who shouldn't have ever been in a place to fall in love...but then they did. Seriously, LOVE unlikely romances when the author can make it work.

And this definitely is an unlikely love story since D is the hitman sent to kill Jack, a surgeon who was unlucky enough to be at the wrong place at the wrong time...which means he's now the key witness against a huge mob boss and everyone is gunning for him. The problem is...D doesn't kill people who don't deserve it. An innocent surgeon falls under that umbrella and D decides to take Jack under his wing and protect him. Just because D doesn't kill him, doesn't mean that other hitmen won't take the job. But there's so much more brewing to this story line...both on D and Jack's side...and as they run for their lives...they both find a new reason why they really need to live.

It's a great story and it's very in depth. This is a long book. I'd be listening and look at the audio thinking that the story was winding down only to find that there was still over 4 hours left. I love that. This is a story that will definitely leave you satisfied.

There's so much to love about this story. I love the grey area of what D does...he truly is a bad guy, but has a great moral code and finding out exactly why/how he got to this place was heartbreaking. I like that the author took that fact and used it. Jack truly does have an issue with D's history. While he understands, he isn't sure that he can accept that reality longterm, even if D leaves the business. That was a great reality in this fictional world. Jack is so super-intelligent...the best scene in the book when he's on the stand proving what a prick the defense attorney is...I was laughing out loud. And this isn't one of those books where the bad guys are caught and everything is tied up in a tidy little bow. The author truly does add those touches of reality to it all that make it fabulous...and easier to believe the happily ever after when it does come. I adored the way she ended the book. It was just really good.

Zero at the Bone Will Chill and Thrill!

Fantastic. Just absolutely and utterly fantastic.

I won't go into another summary of the plot, it's been sufficiently and succinctly summarized in the product description. In fact, I'm not even sure I can review it as well as some have, but after reading Zero at the Bone, I just couldn't fail to add my complete appreciation and admiration of the book and its author.

I was blown away by the depth and intricacy of this story. It's a thriller that grabs you by the throat from the very beginning with its taut pacing and moral ambiguity, and blasts you into a journey across country, through tragedies of past and present, mapping the human soul and the heart's capacity to love and heal along the way. There is SO very much to appreciate and enjoy in this book. It's gritty and urbane. It's tragic and funny. It's hopeful and grief stricken. And it's delightful to find an author that takes the time to allow the story to reveal all of that to the readers in a realistic and dauntingly honest way, instead of paring down the length of the book for the sake of a single element.

I'd caution anyone who was too keen on labeling this book as one thing or another - or using any labels at all, really. Yes, it's an M/M romantic thriller. But that label is far too confining for such a huge story of crime and passion, danger and redemption, self sacrifice and loss...and the joy of finding. It's just a totally huge story in every way. I don't mean the length of it - though it IS delightfully long - but the scope of it. The feel of it. The feeling it left in me after finishing it. It's just huge.

I loved this book. I loved the plot. I loved the characters - Jack, who's almost too good a man to be believed, and yet has just enough peccadillos to make him real (and totally lovable), is a staunch idealist and inherently humane, and D, who has more layers than a tiered wedding cake, each one darker than the last, and each one driven by pain and circumstance. Crushingly human, blind to his worth, D in particular struck a chord in me that will last long after I archive this book. Both of the men were so very real to me, their relationship - the WHOLE of their relationship, not just the romance parts, was so adroitly woven, I felt like I was a part of their world, instead of them being a part of mine. And the secondary characters - the mysterious X and the earnest Churchill in particular - were pure delight.

Seville is a MASTER of character development and with Zero at the Bone, has proven herself capable of going the distance. Keeping a book that long on an even pace without losing control of the plot is a feat that many of my all time favorite authors don't always manage to do. Seville does it with aplomb.

In absolutely every way, I highly recommend this book. If you're one of the unfortunates who has yet to discover the opportunities for a great read in books including gay relationships, this would be a good place to start if you're looking to. I haven't read many books that matched this level of satisfying reading, regardless of the gender pairing.

Good but also bad in frustrating ways

Mad would be too strong a word to use for this, but this book frustrated me to no end. It was so very good in so many ways, and so horribly awful in others.

Good first: she actually bothered to think about the psychology of one previously straight guy and one fighting his gay guy getting together, and actually bothered to make it believable. The progression of emotion and feeling was awesome. The plotting was awesome. I like that the plot wasn't just one carefully construed string of circumstances to get them to have sex as often as possible. I love the conversation Jack has with his friend near the end, before he's seen D again, where he just doesn't know how a day-to-day relationship would work, and whether his feelings were entirely based on circumstance or Stockholm Syndrome. I love that they THINK about these things, and she shows their day-to-day struggles in the denouement, and it is all awesome.

Bad second: I know other people love it, and that it helps them get the character of D, and that's just hunky dory and I'm glad it works for you. I hated, hated, HATED D's dialect. If I'd run across this story on the internet and hadn't paid to read it on my kindle, I may not have ever finished it, I loathed it that much. It's the kind of thing that sends me straight out of a story. I'm glad I pushed through because I really enjoyed this book, but that definitely knocks off a star for me. The other thing that threw me right out of the story: the utter and complete lack of a mention of lube or preparation before all the sex they had until more than halfway through the book. You guys, two men do not penetrate each other without SOME KIND of prep. Or, not and both enjoy it.

Jane, honey, I suggest you read some gay sex manuals to help you out with the mechanics, because the sex scenes were definitely not the strongest point of your novel, and I would greatly love it if you kept writing gay fic that I can read. I would also suggest an editor/beta/proofreader for next time, and if you used one this time, I would find a new one. You need someone who disagrees with your choices sometimes.

So! I liked this book, I would totally recommend with a few caveats, and that's where it all evens out. :)

While I like that it is giving one a good view of ...

I am about halfway through so far. While I like that it is giving one a good view of all the different angles and steps in security testing, it is very disappointing to hit tutorial after tutorial that one cannot follow. I have hit multiple examples that result in a message the version of meterpreter is not compatible with the script. The xplico section states the author is using a known working version, as the current version had problems, but does not state how one can get to that working version to follow the tutorial. The subterfuge tutorial is also not working, claiming the target does not exist even though the Kali host can ping it. As a technical user I completely understand that things change quickly in this space, but would have liked to see a URL at the beginning of the book where the author could provide updates as things change, impacting whether the tutorials need to be adjusted. I do still look forward to finishing out the book and being able to move on to more specific material in increase my knowledge.

Well worth reading!

The book is based on the previous version of Kali but most of it still applies to Kali 2.0. It was very easy to understand with a lot of examples. Daniel has a great writing style that kept me engaged and interested in what was going up next. I would recommend it for anyone who is learning security testing.

Pissing in the Bus

This is a short little story about Liz and her evening out with her boyfriend and her cousin, which ends with everyone involved a little tipsy, a lot horny and involves a LOT of watersports (some of which takes place in public—bar/bus). If you are squeamish at all about watersports, I wouldn’t advise this story, but I have to say that even though I went in a little adverse, I thought it was presented in a way that made it seem almost normal (and even a little sexy). This also depicts a three-way in which every combination of participants is tried (M/M, etc.), and may be taboo for some readers (first cousins), but I thought it was great! Very entertaining light read!
